Agentic SEO Glossary: MCP, Content Agents, Fan-Outs, Crawler Logs, Action Boards

A concise agency glossary of the terms that actually matter in an agentic SEO program in 2026, with the Promptwatch feature each one maps to.

Agentic SEO has its own vocabulary, and most of it gets used loosely. This is the glossary we hand clients so we are talking about the same things. Each term gets a short definition in agency voice, and where it maps to a feature in Promptwatch, the platform we run client programs on, we name the feature. Definitions are deliberately short. The point is shared language, not a sales pitch.

MCP

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for an AI agent to call external tools and read external data. Instead of a vendor building a custom integration for every model, the vendor exposes one MCP server, and any agent that speaks the protocol can use it. Promptwatch ships a hosted MCP server at https://server.promptwatch.com/mcp with read tools like listPrompts, getVisibilityTimeSeries, getCitations, getCrawlerTrend, and listContentGapPrompts, and write tools like createContent, acceptContentSlot, and publishContentLive. We use it from Claude, Cursor, and the ChatGPT plugin. Read-only keys hide the write tools, which is how we let a client team look at the data without letting them publish.

Content agents

Content agents are the part of an agentic program that plans, writes, and publishes GEO articles to a connected CMS. In Promptwatch they publish to Webflow and Framer today, with WordPress listed as coming soon. The feature everyone talks about is the publishing. The feature that matters on a retainer is the review inbox. Every draft lands in an inbox. A human accepts or declines each slot. We keep autopublish off on every client account. The agent drafts. The human publishes. That line is what separates an agentic program from a content firehose.

Query fan-outs

A query fan-out is the way a single search intent spreads into many phrasings. A buyer looking for an AI visibility tool does not type one prompt. They type dozens: "best AI visibility tool," "AI search ranking tracker," "how to track brand in ChatGPT," and so on. Each phrasing is a prompt in the fan-out, and each can rank and cite differently. Prompt tracking in Promptwatch gives us search volumes, difficulty scores, and fan-outs per prompt, and the query fanouts report shows the volume and query-length trend. We freeze the fan-out for a client in week one so the visibility trend is readable week over week. If the fan-out drifts, the trend is a different needle each Friday.

Crawler logs

Crawler logs are the records of which AI crawlers hit the site and what they found. Prompt tracking tells you whether you got cited. Crawler logs tell you why. Promptwatch Agent Analytics records the AI crawlers that hit the site, ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and the Meta AI crawler, and traces the crawl-to-citation path. The path is the single most useful diagnostic we run. A client cited on a prompt they care about, while the relevant page returns 5xx on half the hits, is a cache header fix, not a content project. Without the logs we would have written three more articles and called it activity.

Action boards

An action board is a prioritized to-do list generated from the visibility data rather than from a human's habit. Promptwatch Unified Actions produces an AI-generated to-do list from the prompt, citation, and crawler data, and the action board ranks findings by impact and effort. The listActionItems read tool pulls the same queue into Cursor or Claude, so the analyst can draft the fix against the finding without copy-pasting from a dashboard. We use it to sequence the work: crawl fixes first because they are cheap and move the trend, content gaps second, measurement third. The board is not the strategy. It is the queue. The strategy is which prompts we froze in week one.

Citation trends are how citation sources and volume move over time, not just a point-in-time count. Promptwatch citation analytics gives page-level, domain-level, Reddit, YouTube, and offsite citations with type breakdowns, and citation trends show how those sources shift week to week. A client whose citations are stable in count but shifting from publisher domains to Reddit threads is a different story from a client whose citations are flat across the board. The trend tells us which one we are looking at.

Visitor analytics

Visitor analytics are AI-referred traffic and conversions, tracked via a lightweight script or a GTM template. Visibility is a leading indicator. Revenue is a lagging one. Promptwatch visitor analytics close the loop. We report both, and we are honest about the gap between them. A client can have strong citations and weak traffic if the citation is a passing mention. A client can have weak citations and surprising traffic if the engine sends a referral without naming the brand. The visitor trend tells us which one we have.

What we will not do

We will not use these terms as buzzwords to close a deal. Each one maps to a feature we actually run, and a measurement we actually report. The commitments we keep are the boring ones: no long-term contracts, senior specialists only, and a review inbox a human actually opens.

If you want the glossary above attached to a program on your site, with the MCP server, the crawler logs, and the action board running against your prompt list, write to us at hello@1001seomedia.com. We will scope the prompt list, pull the logs, and show you what these words look like when they are features and not filler.
