AI Brand Monitoring Tools to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: AI Search Visibility 2026
How we track client brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini in 2026, why sponsored placements now need their own column, and the monitoring tools we compare.
A year ago, AI brand monitoring meant one question per prompt: did the answer mention the client? In 2026 there is a second question sitting right under the answer. ChatGPT now shows ads on its Free and Go plans, and Google shows ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode. So a monitoring report that only counts mentions can miss that a competitor is paying to appear directly beneath an answer that recommends your client.
This post covers how we monitor brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for clients, how we keep organic mentions and sponsored placements apart, and how the tools compare. We run client programs on Promptwatch, so that is the reference point.
Why these three engines
They reach people at different scale and in different ways. Promptwatch publishes the user counts it works from: ChatGPT at 820M+ weekly active users, Gemini at 650M+ monthly active users, and Perplexity at 22M+ monthly active users. Perplexity is far smaller, but it leans heavily on visible citations, which makes it a good place to see which sources an engine trusts.
Gemini is the one clients forget. Many teams track ChatGPT carefully, glance at Perplexity, and assume Google is covered by their SEO tool. Gemini answers and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate surfaces from the ten blue links, and they need their own tracking.
Organic mentions: the core report
For each client we build a prompt list in buyer language: category questions ("best payroll software for small agencies"), comparisons against named rivals, and problem descriptions with no brand named. The same strings go to every engine so a gap reflects the engine, not the wording.
Per prompt and engine we record whether the client is named, its position in the answer, the sentiment of the sentence, which competitors appear, and which pages were cited. Promptwatch runs this daily on paid plans across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and the other tracked engines, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, reading the real product interfaces. One limit to flag up front: the free Explore plan covers ChatGPT only, with 10 prompts.
Citations matter more than the mention count. When the client is missing, the cited pages tell you why. Promptwatch's citation analytics breaks sources down by page and domain, including Reddit and YouTube. If Gemini keeps citing a comparison article that leaves the client out, that article is the job.
Sponsored placements: a separate column
Here is the part most monitoring setups have not caught up with.
ChatGPT. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, for Free and Go users. Ads appear in a labeled unit below the response and are matched to the conversation's context. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answer (Ads in ChatGPT). Advertisers only see reporting on their own ads, and OpenAI has not described a public ad library.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Ads can appear inside these AI surfaces too.
Perplexity. Perplexity stopped taking new advertisers in October 2025, per Adweek, and in February 2026 told WIRED it was moving away from ads. For now, Perplexity monitoring is an organic job.
We do not claim anything about ads in the Gemini app itself. We have not seen documentation for them, and we track the Google ad surfaces we can document.
Why separate columns? Because the two numbers lead to different actions. A low organic mention rate means content, sources, or crawl access. A competitor's ad count rising on the client's best prompts means a paid decision, or a reason to defend the organic position harder. Blend them into one "visibility" score and nobody can act on it.
Promptwatch's Ads Radar captures sponsored ads from responses to the prompts we already track, in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Each record has the advertiser and domain, copy, image or price, target URL, and the triggering prompt (Ads Radar docs). Its By Prompt view puts each prompt's ad count next to the client's average visibility, which is the comparison we report. Ads Radar is on the Business plan ($579/mo) and all agency plans, not on Essential or Professional, per llms.txt on 2026-10-21.
The tools we compare
When a client already pays for a tool, this is how we rank it for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini monitoring. Engine details come from each vendor's published plan information as recorded in our comparison notes.
- Promptwatch. All three engines on every paid plan, daily, with citation analytics, sentiment, crawler logs, visitor analytics, and Ads Radar on Business and agency plans. From $95/mo.
- AthenaHQ. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini on Starter, with an Action Center that turns gaps into tasks. From $295/mo. No ads tracking documented.
- Scrunch AI. Up to nine engines on Enterprise, from $250/mo annual. Strong on serving AI-optimized pages to crawlers. No ads tracking documented.
- Gauge. Six engines including Gemini and Perplexity, daily, with a content engine and ChatGPT Ads tracking. From $599/mo. No published crawler logs.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar. Mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI surfaces from a large prompt index. From $199/mo on top of an Ahrefs plan. Better for category research than for a client's own prompt list.
- Semrush AI Toolkit. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode for $99/mo per domain, 25 prompts. Fine if the client lives in Semrush.
- Profound. Gemini and Perplexity sit on the Enterprise engine list, from about $40k a year. The $99/mo annual Starter is ChatGPT only.
- LLM Pulse. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini on every plan from €49/mo, with "AI ads tracking" listed. Weekly by default.
How we would set it up
- Write 30 to 50 buyer prompts and load them into Promptwatch. Essential at $95/mo covers 50 prompts on every tracked engine.
- Install visitor analytics through the GTM template in week one, so AI-referred visits are attributed before any content changes.
- Report organic mentions per engine weekly, as trends, not single checks.
- Once the client sells on prompts where competitors advertise, move to Business or run the client under our agency plan to add Ads Radar.
