AI Search Optimization for ChatGPT and Perplexity SEO (2026)
AI search optimization for ChatGPT and Perplexity in 2026 is still SEO plus a citation log. Here is the program we run when those two engines are the brief.
AI search optimization for ChatGPT and Perplexity SEO in 2026 is one request: show up when those two products write the answer, then change the page that should have won. Google Search Console now reports generative impressions. It does not report ChatGPT or Perplexity. Anyone who "turned on AI SEO" and only watches Overviews has a Google program with a fashionable name.
The measurement layer we use is Promptwatch. The page work is still ours. Ahrefs and Semrush stay for ranks, gaps, and links. GEO in 2026 is the longer program note. This post stays on the two engines in the title.
What 2026 changed, and what it did not
Google published AI features and an optimization guide. In June 2026, Search Console added generative AI performance reports: impressions, not clicks. Schema is still useful for rich results. Google says it is not required for Overviews.
None of that files a ChatGPT or Perplexity report. OpenAI's bot docs tell you whether GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed. PerplexityBot is a separate robots.txt line. If those crawlers never fetched the candidate URL, the optimization ticket is a crawl fix, not a rewrite.
Promptwatch paid plans replay your prompts against the ChatGPT and Perplexity UIs, daily, with mention versus citation. Gemini, Claude, and Overviews sit on the same project if you want them. Essential is $95/mo for 50 prompts. Explore is free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. Kick-off is $199/mo with unlimited projects and 10 seats. Professional is $245/mo. Business is $579/mo.
The optimization half (still not a hack list)
The unit of work is the claim the model needs to lift. Direct first sentence under the heading. A table if the prompt is a comparison. Specs and prices that are true this month. Original notes you would stand behind on a sales call.
What we do not do in 2026: a thin URL for every phrasing variant, llms.txt as a ChatGPT strategy, buying forum praise. Mentions still matter when they are real and on URLs the fan-out already retrieves. Promptwatch query fan-outs often name that third-party page.
Re-check the same prompts after the fix ships. If crawler logs show a block, that ticket comes first. If the page was crawled and still lost, we edit the passage or go earn the source Perplexity already footnotes. We do not declare victory from a GSC impression on a different query.
How to get cited by ChatGPT is the edit checklist. Local businesses still run the local SEO playbook in parallel. Assistants lean on GBP, reviews, and consistent NAP. There is no ChatGPT-only local trick that replaces a dead profile.
Tools we keep, tools we do not start on
Ahrefs Brand Radar is modeled. Semrush AI Toolkit is $99/mo per domain and also modeled. Keep both for the Google graph. Do not optimize a Tuesday Perplexity miss from a monthly modeled index.
Otterly at $29 tracks ChatGPT and Perplexity in the base set. Refresh can lag. Gemini and Claude are add-ons with a 7-day lag. Fine as a second glance. Weak as the weekly optimization loop.
Peec is $95 for three models. Profound Starter is $99 annual and ChatGPT only, so it is not a Perplexity SEO tool. Scrunch is $250 annual and weekly Excel. If one of those is already paid, we will work from the export. We will not start a 2026 ChatGPT and Perplexity program on Starter or a weekly spreadsheet.
How we run the 2026 loop
- Twenty-five prompts from sales and the inbox. Same wording on ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Confirm GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot are allowed. Check Promptwatch crawler logs, not only robots.txt intentions.
- Classify misses: crawl, passage, no page, third-party.
- Ship one fix. Re-check in two weeks on the same rows.
- Pull GSC generative impressions in the same review so Google does not disappear from the deck. Label them impressions.
Country, state, and city sit on the prompt when "best [category]" changes by place. DataForSEO sits next to Promptwatch when we still need classic rank and SERP context on the Google side of the same account. Visitor analytics (script or GTM) attach the click if one arrives. Most answers still send none.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT and Perplexity SEO a separate retainer?
Not here. It is SEO plus this log: same crawl hygiene, extra editorial shape, extra weekly review. See services if you want that cadence.
Can we skip Promptwatch if we paste into both products on Fridays?
You can. You will not get a stored history, citation-by-URL, or crawler errors on the URL that lost. Two people will also paste slightly different wording and argue about the result.
Does schema help ChatGPT?
Google says structured data is not required for Overviews. ChatGPT does not publish a schema coupon either. We still mark up what the user sees because rich results and entity clarity are ordinary SEO. We will not sell Overview schema as a ChatGPT ranking factor.
What to do this week
- Read Google's two Search Central pages so nobody on the account invents ranking factors.
- Write 25 ChatGPT and Perplexity prompts from sales.
- Load them into Promptwatch Essential unless you only need a ChatGPT demo on Explore.
- Fix one red prompt. Re-check it.
- If you want us on the weekly review, hello@1001seomedia.com. We follow the docs for Google. We use Promptwatch for ChatGPT and Perplexity.
