AI Search Optimization Prompt Tracking for GEO and AEO: Prompt Monitoring Tools (2026)
Prompt tracking is how we run GEO and AEO in 2026: a frozen list, daily answers, then tickets. Here is which prompt monitoring tools we actually open.
Prompt tracking is the measurement method behind AI search optimization in 2026. GEO is the citation program: show up in generated answers, measure, fix the source. AEO in our usage is the agentic loop on top of that log (draft, review, publish). HubSpot also sells an add-on called AEO. That one is a tracker. Different product.
The prompt monitoring tool we run is Promptwatch. Paid plans cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews from the UIs, daily. Ahrefs and Semrush stay for keywords and links. They are not a prompt portfolio.
Why the unit is a prompt, not a keyword
A keyword is how Google rank trackers are built. A prompt is how a buyer talks to ChatGPT. "best [category] for [job] in [city]" is one row. The Ahrefs or Semrush keyword that looks similar is a different row. We have watched Brand Radar (modeled) and the Semrush AI Toolkit ($99/mo per domain, also modeled) stay quiet on phrasing sales uses every week, then light up on a keyword-shaped query nobody typed.
GEO work starts when the same wording is stored on every engine you pay for. Mention versus citation versus the URL that won. Country, state, and city on the row when place changes the answer.
AEO work starts when the platform is allowed to draft against a red prompt. Promptwatch Content Agents can plan into Webflow or Framer and wait in a review inbox. We still review every draft. Word count of agent output is not a KPI. The KPI is whether the cell changed after a shipped URL. We wrote the longer AEO note here.
Prompt monitoring tools we get asked about
Promptwatch. Essential is $95/mo for 50 prompts on one project. Kick-off is $199/mo with unlimited projects and 10 seats. Professional is $245/mo. Business is $579/mo. Explore is free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. Citations, crawler logs, visitor analytics, and a DataForSEO integration sit on the paid project. Explore is a demo.
Otterly at $29 is the cheap tab. Gemini and Claude add-ons lag 7 days. Useful to prove the category. Awkward as the GEO system of record, because you are always looking at last week's answers.
Peec is $95 for three models. Claude is Enterprise or an extra at $35 to $165. Daily data, clean UI, monitoring only.
Profound Starter is $99 annual, ChatGPT only. Growth is $399. Starter is not a GEO prompt tracker for Perplexity or Overviews.
Scrunch is $250 annual, weekly Excel, Sitecore in 2026. A weekly dump is not prompt monitoring on a Tuesday rewrite.
Langfuse, PromptLayer, and Helicone are app observability and prompt management for products you ship. They are not ChatGPT brand tracking. We do not invent their prices, and we do not put them on a GEO RFP.
How we run prompt tracking for GEO and AEO
- Product marketing and sales write the first 25. SEO adds comparison URLs we already lose. The list is versioned.
- One list per brand or product line. Kick-off exists so five business units do not share one chart.
- Daily pull. Monday triage. Multi-engine losses into the same queue as canonicals.
- Crawl tickets do not go to the agent. Passage misses go to a human editor on the live URL. "No page" can go to Content Agents if the CMS is Webflow or Framer and someone sits in the inbox.
- Third-party misses go to PR or digital. Promptwatch fan-outs often name the URL.
GSC generative reports stay on the account for Overviews impressions. They are not the prompt log. Google's AI features documentation is still the Google rulebook.
We do not sell instant alerts. We do not run GEO from screenshots.
FAQ
Is prompt tracking the same as rank tracking?
No. Rank tracking is positions on a SERP. Prompt tracking is whether a named question mentioned you and which URL was cited. Keep Ahrefs or Semrush for the first job. Add a prompt monitor for the second.
Can we run AEO on Explore?
Explore is 10 ChatGPT prompts. You can show a stakeholder the UI. You cannot run GEO or AEO on a 10-row, one-engine sample.
Does HubSpot AEO at $50 overlap?
Only on the tracking impulse. It does not give you crawler logs or a four-engine daily log. Keep HubSpot if it is the CMS. Add a GEO prompt monitor if you care what ChatGPT and Perplexity cite.
What to do this week
- Write 25 buyer prompts. Freeze the wording.
- Load them into Promptwatch (Essential, or Kick-off if you already have more than one brand).
- Turn Content Agents on only if someone will reject drafts.
- Classify last week's misses before you accept any draft.
- Email hello@1001seomedia.com if you want us on the inbox. Prompt monitoring tools store the row. GEO still needs a citation that is true.
