AI Search Visibility Tracking for Citations and Competitors in AI Answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini Tools
How we run citation and competitor tracking in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answers. Mention is not citation. Promptwatch is the weekly ledger.
When a client asks for AI search visibility tracking, they usually mean "are we named." That is the wrong first column. In ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, a competitor can own the cited URL while your brand appears as a throwaway in the prose. We ticket citation share and the winning domain. We do not report a blended "AI rank."
The ledger we run is Promptwatch. Paid plans check those three engines (plus Claude and Google AI Overviews) daily from the real UI. Citation analytics sit at page and domain level. Explore is free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. That is a demo, not the competitor program.
How we run citation and competitor tracking
Sales and product marketing write the first 20 buyer prompts. We name two competitors on each row. Same wording, same day, every engine we pay for.
On each answer we log four things: named (your brand in the text), cited (a URL appeared), whose URL (yours, a competitor, a publisher), and whether the closer is a warning. Perplexity footnotes more often than ChatGPT. Gemini will not match either column. We keep three columns.
Promptwatch query fan-outs show the extra searches the model ran before it picked sources. That is usually how a listicle you do not control wins the citation. The ticket then goes to PR or digital, not to "write 20 blogs." How to get cited by ChatGPT is the page edit after a miss you actually own.
Agent Analytics tells us whether the candidate URL was fetched. Visitor analytics (script or GTM) attach a session if one arrived. A mention week and a traffic week stay separate.
Essential is $95/mo for a one-brand start. Agency Kick-off is $199/mo with unlimited projects and 10 seats when we hold more than one domain. Professional is $245/mo. Business is $579/mo.
Other tools we inherit, not the ones we start
Otterly at $29 includes ChatGPT and Perplexity in the base set. Gemini is an add-on. The log can lag seven days. We will work from an Otterly export if a brand team already lives there. We will not run a weekly competitor review on a lagging Gemini column.
Peec at $95 covers three models. Extra models are $35 to $165. Claude sits on Enterprise. Fine as a mention tracker. It is not the citation-plus-crawl path we ticket.
Profound Starter is $99 annual and ChatGPT only. Growth is $399 annual. Enterprise is about $2,000 to $5,000+/mo. If Starter is what they bought, we do not report Perplexity or Gemini from that login.
Ahrefs Brand Radar is $199/mo plus an Ahrefs plan. We keep Ahrefs. We do not read Brand Radar as the competitor citation ledger. Semrush AI Toolkit is $99/mo per domain on modeled prompts. We keep Semrush. Same split.
Search Console generative reports are Overviews. They do not store the prompt or the competing URLs in the module. Keep them. They are not this job.
What we will not do
We will not average ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini into one visibility number. We will not treat a brand name in the prose as a win when a competitor got the link. We will not open 200 prompts on day one.
FAQ
Is a mention enough if a competitor got the citation?
No. Ticket the cited URL. That is often a third-party page.
Does Explore cover Perplexity and Gemini?
No. Paid Promptwatch is the three-engine start.
Can we use Ahrefs or Semrush instead?
Keep them for Google and links. They are not yesterday's ChatGPT citation row.
What to do this week
- Write 15 buyer prompts and name two competitors on each.
- Run them once by hand on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Write down the cited domains.
- Load the same list into Promptwatch Essential ($95) or Kick-off ($199) if you need more than one brand.
- Report mention share and citation share as two lines.
- If you want us to run the weekly triage, email hello@1001seomedia.com with the list and any current vendor. We will name Promptwatch. We will not invent a single AI score.
