GEO tools designed to support SEO for AI engines like Perplexity

Are there GEO tools built for AI engines like Perplexity? Yes. Here is how we use one on client programs to track Perplexity citations, crawler access and visits.

Clients ask this about Perplexity more than any other engine, usually because someone on their team has noticed it citing sources and wants to be one of them. The answer is yes, GEO tools exist for it. GEO means generative engine optimization. The nuance is that few tools are built only for Perplexity. Most cover it as one engine of several, and the useful difference is how deeply.

Here is how we handle Perplexity on Promptwatch, which our client programs run on.

Why Perplexity needs its own attention

Perplexity shows citations in the answer itself. That changes the work. Where a ChatGPT mention might come from model memory, a Perplexity answer usually points at specific pages. So the job has three parts: be fetchable, be quotable, and be on the pages Perplexity trusts.

Step one: check access

PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User are real agents that show up in server logs. Agent Analytics in Promptwatch logs them with IP verification, so spoofed user agents are filtered out. Failed requests come with explanations, and we can filter by path to look at one section of a site at a time.

This is the first thing we look at. We have found it is the cheapest problem to solve and the one most worth ruling out. A firewall rule or CDN setting can block an agent without anyone noticing. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245/mo). Essential ($95/mo) does not have them.

Logs flow in through Cloudflare (Logpush or an auto-deployed Worker), AWS CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN, a custom HTTP endpoint or the WordPress plugin.

Step two: monitor Perplexity as it is

Perplexity is monitored through the real interface, alongside ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini and Meta AI. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are tracked through APIs. Running them together matters, because a prompt where Perplexity names the client and ChatGPT does not points to a different problem than one where neither does.

Prompts come from Prompt Explorer, which suggests them from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. We tag them by topic and type, add personas, and set a Brand Book so mentions are counted properly.

Step three: read the citations

For each prompt where Perplexity does not name the client, we look at what it did cite. Citation analytics shows page and domain level citations and URL positions. The Page Tracker watches specific URLs, including a competitor's. Offsite mentions show where the brand is named in third-party pages without a link, and Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports cover community sources. Citation Trends classifies citations by content type and source type, which helps decide whether we need a comparison page, a guide or a third-party mention.

Step four: close the gaps

Content gap analysis scores coverage against prompts. Content Refresh suggests diff-style edits to existing pages, which we prefer to new pages when something already exists. On Business and Enterprise plans, the Content Agent can plan, write and publish, with a review inbox. We keep the review on. Publishing runs to WordPress, Webflow or Framer.

Step five: measure visits

Visitor analytics counts AI-referred visits and conversions with Perplexity among the sources. It installs through a script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin. For clients, this is the evidence that matters.

What it does not cover

Promptwatch's Ads Radar covers sponsored ads in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It does not cover Perplexity, so we do not promise clients ad monitoring there.

Other tools we get asked about

Clients bring up AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound. AthenaHQ starts at $295/mo and has an Action Center. Scrunch AI Core is $250/mo and includes Perplexity among four tracked engines. Profound is an enterprise contract sold more as marketing agents than as a tracker. SEO suites like Ahrefs have AI add-ons that include Perplexity. They are all legitimate. We run Promptwatch because the crawler logs, citations and visits sit in one place, which is what lets us show cause and effect on Perplexity specifically.

Honest limits

Perplexity answers vary between runs and with phrasing. A tracked panel is a sample. And no tool can make Perplexity cite a client. What we can do is show whether the agent can read the site, who is being cited instead, and whether visits followed once we made changes.
