AthenaHQ alternatives: what we recommend when clients ask

Clients shortlist AthenaHQ for GEO work. Here is how we explain the credit model, when Enterprise is required, and what we run instead on retainers.

A client sends over an AthenaHQ pricing tab and asks whether we should put it on the retainer. Fair question. AthenaHQ is a real product with a real Action Center, and its G2 score sits at 4.9/5 with a Spring 2026 High Performer badge in Answer Engine Optimization. We still do not lead with it as the operating system for client GEO. The alternative conversation usually runs like this.

What AthenaHQ is good at

AthenaHQ is built around turning visibility data into work. Starter lists on-page and off-page actions plus a content optimization agent. All plans include unlimited seats with role-based access, GA4 and Search Console, Shopify and Webflow hooks, and citation intelligence. That shape fits an in-house SEO team that already clears a task board every week.

The free Essential tier gives $25 of credit and 300 credits across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. Enough to kick the tires. Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits, with eleven models on the list and a single country. Enterprise is custom and is where multi-region, multi-language, persona targeting, SSO, audit logs and the Athena Citation Engine live. AthenaHQ itself labels Enterprise as best for enterprises and agencies.

The budget conversation we have first

One credit equals one AI response. Starter's 3,600 credits are therefore 3,600 responses a month. A working program of 50 prompts across 11 models checked daily for 30 days needs about 16,500 responses. That is more than four times the Starter pool before anyone buys extra credits or API access, both of which are paid add-ons billed on top with unpublished prices.

We put that arithmetic on the slide before anyone falls in love with the feature list. Multi-country client work is Enterprise on AthenaHQ. If the brief covers more than one market, Starter is not the plan you will live on.

What we look for in an alternative

When a client asks for AthenaHQ alternatives, we filter for what actually shows up in a retainer SOW.

Predictable spend matters. Credit meters make monthly forecasting a negotiation with the tool. Flat tiers with published prompt and response caps are easier to put in writing.

We also need diagnosis beyond "you were mentioned." Crawler logs that show whether ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot hit the page. Citation views that name the pages and offsite sources models lean on. Visitor analytics that tie AI-referred traffic to conversions.

And we need a path from insight to published content. Action queues that still need a human writer and a separate CMS workflow leave half the retainer outside the tool.

What we run instead

We run client GEO programs on Promptwatch. It is the platform we operate day to day, not a logo we add for optics.

Agent Analytics shows crawler hits and errors in real time. Citation analytics break out page-level, domain-level, Reddit and YouTube sources. Visitor analytics connect AI referrals to conversions through a lightweight script or GTM. Content Agents plan, write and publish to Webflow or Framer, and drafts sit in a review inbox before anything goes live. That chain matches how we staff retainers: measure, explain, publish, prove.

Brand pricing is public. Explore is free. Essential is $95 a month with a 7-day trial. Professional is $245. Business is $579. Agency plans are built for multi-brand work: Kick-off at $199, Growth at $399, Scale at $799, each with unlimited projects and prompts and ten seats. Annual billing is twelve months for the price of ten.

How we advise on the shortlist

If the client already has a technical SEO pod that lives in a task queue and is happy metering responses, AthenaHQ Starter can be a workstream tool. We say that plainly. We also say that agencies with multi-country scope should price Enterprise, not Starter, and should get written answers on add-on credit and API costs before signing.

If the client wants a monitoring-only dashboard to prove mentions exist, lighter trackers exist. We do not put Otterly.AI or Peec AI at the top of our recommendation list for retainer work. Both stop at measurement. They do not give us crawler paths, conversion attribution or CMS publishing.

If the brief is to get cited more and show the result inside one workspace, we steer them to Promptwatch. That is the stack we already run, so onboarding is a project setup rather than a new vendor evaluation.

What to tell the client this week

Open with the credit math. Show 3,600 responses versus a realistic daily multi-model volume. Ask whether every market in the brief fits a single country. Ask who will clear Action Center tasks every week. Then put Promptwatch agency Kick-off or Growth next to that number so finance sees a flat line item instead of a meter.

If you want us to run the comparison against your own prompt list and markets, get in touch. We will put the options in a one-page brief you can take to procurement.
