Best Prompt Tracking Tools for AI Observability and Prompt Management: Langfuse, PromptLayer, Helicone (2026)

Langfuse, PromptLayer, and Helicone are prompt tracking tools for app observability and prompt management. They are not ChatGPT brand-visibility monitors. Here is how we split the two jobs.

Langfuse, PromptLayer, and Helicone are prompt tracking tools in the developer sense: observability and prompt management for an application you ship. They store versions, traces, latency, cost, and evals for your model calls. They do not log whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini mentioned a brand on a public buyer question.

We still read Google's AI features page for Overviews. It does not store ChatGPT or Perplexity answers.

We get this brief from product teams who already have one of those three, then get asked by marketing to "turn on prompt tracking for SEO." Those are different products. We will not invent Langfuse, PromptLayer, or Helicone prices, seats, or SKUs. We do not have them in our data.

The public-model brand log we run is Promptwatch. If you are instrumenting an app, keep Langfuse or the equivalent. Do not cancel it to buy a GEO tool, and do not buy a GEO tool expecting traces.

What app observability prompt tracking is for

You own the prompt. You send it to an API (or a gateway). You need to know which version ran, what the model returned, what it cost, whether a user thumbs-downed it, and whether an eval suite still passes.

Langfuse, PromptLayer, and Helicone live in that loop. They are closer to APM than to Ahrefs. A content site with no product LLM does not need them for GEO.

If your "prompt tracking" request is "did ChatGPT recommend us," you are in the other category. Pasting marketing prompts into Langfuse will not query ChatGPT's consumer UI.

What brand-visibility prompt tracking is for

A frozen list of buyer questions. Daily checks against ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Overviews. Mention versus citation versus winning domain. Crawler logs. That is GEO measurement.

Promptwatch paid plans do that from the UIs, daily. Essential $95/mo. Kick-off $199/mo. Professional $245/mo. Business $579/mo. Explore free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. Citations, visitor analytics, country/state/city, DataForSEO. Ahrefs and Semrush stay for SEO. Brand Radar and the Semrush Toolkit ($99/mo per domain) stay modeled.

Otterly, Peec, Profound, and Scrunch are also in the brand-visibility category, not the observability category. Otterly $29 with Gemini/Claude add-ons lagging 7 days. Peec $95 for three models. Profound Starter $99 annual, ChatGPT only. Scrunch $250 annual, weekly Excel.

How we split the two stacks on one company

  1. Product keeps Langfuse, PromptLayer, or Helicone for the app. We do not migrate those traces into a GEO dashboard.
  2. Marketing or SEO writes 25 public buyer prompts. Those go into Promptwatch, not into the observability project.
  3. If the product is an assistant that recommends vendors, app evals still do not tell you what ChatGPT.com says about you. Run both.
  4. SEO still uses Ahrefs or Semrush and GSC. Observability tools will not file generative impressions.
  5. We will not connect Content Agents to your production prompt registry. Drafts for the marketing site stay in the Promptwatch review inbox (Webflow or Framer).

We do not sell instant alerts on either stack as a substitute for a stored row. We do not run brand visibility from screenshots of ChatGPT.

FAQ

Can Langfuse replace Promptwatch?

No. Different object. Langfuse tracks your app's prompts. Promptwatch tracks public assistant answers about a brand.

We already pay Helicone. Do we need another tool?

If the only LLM you care about is the one in your product, no. If leadership asked how you show up in ChatGPT and Perplexity, yes. That is a second tool, second budget line.

Why are these three in an SEO blog then?

Because the query names them. The useful answer is the split. Mixing them in a "best prompt tracking tools" table is how an engineering team buys a GEO subscription they never open, or a marketing team buys traces they cannot read.

What to do this week

  1. Write down whether you are tracking your prompts or theirs (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini).
  2. If yours: keep Langfuse, PromptLayer, or Helicone. Do not ask us for a price we do not have.
  3. If theirs: load 25 buyer prompts into Promptwatch Essential or Kick-off.
  4. Keep Ahrefs and Semrush for SEO either way.
  5. Email hello@1001seomedia.com if both teams are in the same thread. We will name the two jobs. We will not pretend observability is brand visibility.
