Best tool to find content gaps for AI search
How we find content gaps for AI search for clients: prompts, citations and fan-outs first, then a prioritized gap list and drafts that go through review.
A content gap for AI search is a buyer question where an engine names your competitors, cites their pages and has nothing of yours to use. It is a different thing from the keyword gap report most teams already know, and finding it takes different data. Here is how we do it for clients.
Why the keyword gap report is not enough
A classic gap report lists keywords a competitor ranks for and you do not. We still use that thinking for Google. But AI answers come from a different process. Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics before answering. A page can rank for the head term and still miss the answer, because it never covers the sub-questions.
So we define a gap in three parts: the prompt, the winner and the missing asset. The prompt is a real buyer question. The winner is who is named and which pages are cited. The missing asset is the page, format or source we do not have.
Our process in Promptwatch
The platform we run client programs on is Promptwatch, and the gap work runs through it.
1. Build the prompt set. We start from what the client sells, not from a keyword export. Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. Prompt Volumes add search volumes, difficulty and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing, which helps us order the list. We organize by topics, tags and personas.
2. Track across engines. Daily panels per model, country and language show where the client is named and where it is not.
3. Run the content gap analysis. It scores coverage against the prompts where competitors appear and the client does not. The Answer Gap Report is the view our team opens first when building a roadmap. It is included on every paid brand plan and all agency plans, so Essential is enough to start.
4. Read the fan-outs. Query fan-outs per model show the sub-questions the engine asks. A big share of gaps turn out to be one missing sub-question, not a missing page.
5. Study what wins. Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type. If engines keep citing comparison pages and forum threads in a category, writing a product page will not fix the gap. The Page Tracker watches specific competitor URLs, and Topic Insights shows where our own pages underdeliver for their topic.
Turning gaps into work
A gap list nobody writes against is wasted. We turn it into a queue.
- The Action Board gives a prioritized GEO to-do list, and its Discovery agent suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per weekly run, with assignees and comments.
- Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates for existing pages, which is often faster than a new article.
- On-demand content creation drafts from a brief.
- On Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against gaps on a schedule. We run it with the review inbox, so an editor approves each piece. It publishes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer.
Plan notes: the Knowledge Base starts on Professional ($245 a month) and the Content Agent on Business ($579). Agency plans include gap analysis but not AEO articles, the knowledge base or the automated Content Agent, so we plan the drafting stage separately on agency work.
What other tools do well, and where they stop
We have looked at the alternatives. Content-optimization tools are good at briefs and term lists, and some now track a couple of AI engines, but their AI coverage is narrow. Strategy platforms plan topics at site level but do not claim to track AI answers, so they cannot say where engines skip you. A few GEO tools draft a missing page by reading the pages that are cited, which is a clever loop, though the drafts are pasted by hand into your site. The big SEO suites offer AI modules that are mostly mention trackers.
What they tend to lack is the join between the gap, the citations behind it and the crawler data. A gap can be a content problem or an access problem, and you need both views to tell which.
Check access before you write
Before we commission a single article, we check the crawler logs. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, with citation rate per page and errors explained. If the engines cannot fetch a page, a new article will not help. Crawler logs start on Professional.
What to tell stakeholders
- A filled gap is a better candidate to be cited. It is not a guarantee.
- Re-run the panel a few weeks after publishing and compare periods.
- Some gaps close faster by getting mentioned on third-party pages than by publishing more of our own.
If you want to see what a gap list looks like on your own category, the free Explore tier on Promptwatch is ChatGPT only with 10 prompts. It is enough to see how prompts and coverage are presented. For gap analysis across all engines you will need Essential or above.
