The best tool to track which sources AI search engines cite, from our client work
How we track which sources AI search engines cite for clients, from domain mixes to Reddit threads, and why we run that work on Promptwatch.
The most useful hour in an AI visibility engagement is usually the one where we sort a client's cited sources into piles. It rarely matches what the client expected. They thought the engines were reading their blog. Often the engines are reading a comparison site, two forum threads and a video.
That is why we care which tool tracks sources best. Here is what we look for and what we do with the data.
What counts as a source
An AI answer may cite a company's own page, a competitor's page, a review or comparison site, a news article, a Reddit thread, a YouTube video or a LinkedIn post. Each type calls for a different response. You edit your own page. You contribute to a forum. You pitch a publication. You cannot do the same thing for all of them, so the tool has to tell them apart.
Promptwatch does this several ways. Citation analytics run at page and domain level with URL positions. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn each get their own citation report. "My channels" filtering shows how much of the source mix already belongs to the client. Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type, so the pie chart of source types comes straight from the platform.
Our sorting exercise
We take the top 20 cited domains for a client's priority topics and make three piles.
Sources the client owns. The company site, a help center, a documentation hub. These need fixes first: clearer answers, updated facts, accessible pages.
Sources the client can earn a place on. A review directory with an editable profile, a forum where a subject expert can help honestly, a publication that takes contributed pieces. Offsite mentions help here. Promptwatch finds third-party pages that name the brand without linking, which is often the warmest outreach list we have.
Sources the client cannot influence. A competitor's blog, a news article from last year. We note them and move on. Many source lists look like opportunity until you do this honestly.
Pages, not just domains
Domain views tell you who the engines trust. Page views tell you what to write. The Page Tracker follows specific URLs, ours or a competitor's, and we use it to study a cited competitor page: what question it answers, how it is structured, what it includes that ours does not. We are not copying, we are finding gaps.
Citation Trends adds time. First cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page show whether a source holds or fades. A page that peaks quickly and drops needs refreshing sooner than one that holds.
Check your own pages are reachable
A surprising number of "we are not cited" cases come down to a page the AI crawler could not fetch. Agent Analytics provides real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs, with GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others identified by real names, plus a crawl-to-citation path and error tracking. We check this before commissioning any content work. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245/mo), so we recommend that plan or above when a client's problem looks technical.
Connecting sources to outcomes
Visitor analytics ties AI-referred traffic and conversions to pages, so we can see whether a cited source actually sends visitors. Not every citation does, and we say so in reports. A source that is cited often but rarely clicked is a brand signal rather than a traffic source, and we plan accordingly.
Other tools
AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound all show sources in some form, and Ahrefs reports on Reddit and YouTube sources inside its Brand Radar. For local work, tools such as Uberall and BrightLocal show source leaderboards by location. They are sensible in context. Our reason for settling on Promptwatch is practical: sources, crawler logs, traffic and content tooling sit together, so the path from "this domain matters" to "this page is fixed" stays short.
Limits
No tool controls what an engine cites. Source lists show where evidence sits, and answers change from run to run, so we read patterns over weeks and avoid promising outcomes.
Where to start
Track 30 prompts, wait two weeks, then sort the top domains into the three piles. Check crawler logs for your own cited pages. You can run the first pass on the free Explore plan or a 7-day trial of Promptwatch, though crawler logs and the full source reports need a paid plan.
