Can AI visibility tools even be accurate when ChatGPT gives different answers every time?

Yes for trends, no for single answers. We explain how we handle ChatGPT's varying answers in client reporting: repeated sampling, rolling trends and independent checks.

This is the most sensible objection we hear, and we agree with the premise. If ChatGPT gives different answers to the same prompt, a tool that reports one answer as the truth is not measuring anything. Our position is that the tools are accurate about trends and not about single runs, and that the reporting has to be built around that.

What actually varies

Wording, the list of brands, the sources cited and even whether the engine searched the web can change between runs. Phrasing and location matter. Different engines differ more. So a screenshot of one answer is an anecdote, whatever it shows.

How we handle it in client programs

We run client programs on Promptwatch. The relevant design points are the ones we rely on to make the numbers defensible.

Repeated, scheduled sampling. The panel runs daily per model, country and language, so each metric is built from many answers over time. A single odd run gets averaged into a pattern.

Period comparison. The A/B period comparison puts two windows next to each other, so we talk about "this four weeks against the previous four", not about yesterday.

Defined mentions. The Brand Book's analysis instructions decide what counts as a mention. Without a definition, the same answer can be scored differently by different people, which adds noise of its own.

Labeled sources of data. Promptwatch monitors ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through their real UIs. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are tracked via API. We label this in reports because an API response and a person's screen are not always identical.

Visible underlying answers. We can open the response behind any data point and read it. That lets us spot-check by hand, which we do every month on a handful of prompts.

The second source of truth: your own site

The strongest way to handle answer variability is to stop relying on answers alone. Some evidence comes from observations on the client's own site, which do not vary the way generated text does.

Agent Analytics provides IP-verified AI crawler logs, so we see exactly when OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot or Google-Agent fetched a page. Citation analytics and the crawl-to-citation path show which pages were fetched and then cited. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred visits and conversions. If mentions rise and AI-referred visits rise a few weeks later, two independent signals agree. If they diverge, we investigate before we report a win.

Crawler logs start on the Professional plan, at $245 a month, so we are clear with smaller clients about what they cannot cross-check.

Things we warn clients about

A bad prompt set. A panel full of questions nobody asks gives precise, useless numbers. We build prompts from real buyer questions and use Prompt Volumes and Prompt Explorer to sanity-check demand.

Index-style numbers. Some tools model prompts from keyword data rather than tracking real prompts. Those can differ sharply from manual checks, so we treat them as directional.

Overreading short windows. A dip over two days is not a trend. We act on sustained changes over weeks, and we say so in the report.

Overpromising. No one can guarantee that an engine will recommend a brand. We commit to measurement, diagnosis and action, and not to outcomes.

What we say to a skeptical client

You are right that individual answers vary. That is why we do not report individual answers. We report the share of a panel, the movement over weeks and the independent evidence from your site. If you want to check us, pick five prompts and run them yourself next to our report. We would rather you test than trust.

If you want to try the measurement yourself, Promptwatch's free Explore plan covers ChatGPT with 10 prompts, and paid plans start at $95 a month.
