Do ChatGPT free and paid users get different answers, and which version should brands track for AI visibility?

Yes, ChatGPT answers can differ between free and paid users. How we choose what to track for clients, why one answer proves little, and how we report it.

Clients raise this the moment they run a prompt themselves and get a different answer from the one in our report. The question is fair. Yes, answers can differ between free and paid users, and between any two users. Our job is to explain why, and to set up measurement that survives it.

Why answers differ

We put it to clients in plain terms. The model available on a plan is decided by OpenAI and changes over time, so we do not quote specifics. Check OpenAI's current documentation. Beyond the plan, several other things move the output:

  • Whether ChatGPT searched the web for that answer or replied from training.
  • Personalization, such as memory and custom instructions.
  • Country and language.
  • Ordinary variance between runs of the same prompt.

Tier is one input among several, and we cannot say it is the biggest one. The practical consequence is that a single answer, from anyone's account, is an anecdote. Screenshots in a client meeting are fine for illustration, but they cannot be the reporting basis.

What we track for clients

We track ChatGPT with search on, because that is where citations and query fan-outs exist and where a brand can actually diagnose and influence results. Answers without search carry no sources, so there is little to work with.

On our client programs we use Promptwatch. It monitors the live-search platforms through the real interface (ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI), and tracks others via API, so we know which numbers come from which source. Prompt panels run daily per model, country and language.

We have not found a published statement from any tool vendor on which ChatGPT account tier its panel uses. If a client's buyers are known to be heavy paid users, we raise it with the vendor in writing rather than assume. Saying plainly that the gap exists is better than papering over it.

The setup that works

Personas. A procurement lead and a first-time founder phrase things differently. Promptwatch supports personas with persona stacking, so we layer them onto the same prompt set and see which audience a brand wins with.

Country by country. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. If a client sells in three markets, they get three panels, not one blended number.

A tagged panel. Prompts are tagged by topic, intent and type (organic, brand, competitor comparison). That makes it obvious when a drop is limited to one intent.

Trends, not points. We look at Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer over weeks, using the A/B period comparison. Daily noise averages out. A real change does not.

The tiebreaker is traffic

When the answers are noisy, we lean on what is not. Visitor analytics in Promptwatch shows AI-referred traffic and conversions from ChatGPT and other assistants, through a lightweight script, the GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs, including OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, and which pages get cited after they are fetched. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan, so we flag that when scoping smaller clients.

If tracked visibility rises and referred visits do not, we look at which pages are cited and whether the cited pages are the ones we want people to land on. If visits rise and the tracked panel looks flat, the panel probably misses the questions real users ask, and we expand it with the Prompt Explorer, which can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords or People Also Ask.

How we report it

Our client reports state the method up front: which engines, which countries, how many prompts, how often they run, and that results are a sample. Promptwatch generates PDF reports from any dashboard, including scheduled ones, so the method section stays in every monthly pack.

We also say what the report cannot do. It cannot tell a client what any individual sees, and it cannot promise a recommendation. A tracker measures the odds, not the outcome.

A short checklist

  1. Track ChatGPT with search on, plus the other engines your buyers use.
  2. Split by country, language and persona.
  3. Run daily, review weekly, decide monthly.
  4. Pair visibility with crawler logs and referred traffic.
  5. Ask your tool vendor what tier and mode its panel captures, in writing.

If you want to try the measurement yourself, the free Explore tier of Promptwatch covers ChatGPT with 10 prompts, which is enough to see the shape of the problem.
