Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Links and Citations: Official Documentation
How we brief clients from Search Central on AI Overviews and AI Mode links. Snippet eligibility, query fan-out, GSC impressions. Promptwatch holds the prompt GSC does not store.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode links are a documentation job first. We do not brief "GEO citations" from a vendor homepage. The official pages are AI features and your website and Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. This is how we run the Google slice. ChatGPT is a different ticket.
A longer reading of the same docs is here. This post is the links-and-citations cut we walk in a kickoff.
What we tell clients the docs actually say
Overviews give a gist and a set of links. They show when Google thinks they add something beyond classic results. They often stay off. AI Mode is the longer comparison path. Both can fan out: extra related searches that pull more supporting URLs. Google's lawn-weeds example fans into herbicides, non-chemical removal, and prevention. When a supporting link does not match the typed query, we check fan-out before we rewrite the title.
Eligibility: indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google's words: no additional technical requirements. The optimization guide also says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible for those features.
There is no Overview citation schema. Structured data still helps rich results when it matches the page. Search does not use llms.txt. We will not bill a client to implement a file those pages already dismissed.
How we measure Google links without inventing columns
In June 2026 Google added generative AI performance reports: impressions in Overviews, AI Mode, and generative Discover features, plus pages, countries, devices on Search, and dates. That announcement does not list clicks, CTR, or the query. It does not list the other URLs in the module.
Google also says visits from pages that include Overviews have been higher quality (more time on site). That is their research note. It is not a click table we can export.
Preview controls stay as documented: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex. Googlebot via robots.txt is the crawl switch. Google-Extended is not a surgical Overview off switch.
Where Promptwatch sits after the docs
Search Console will not store the prompt or the competing links in the Overview. It will not cover ChatGPT. For that gap we use Promptwatch. Paid plans log AI Overviews and AI Mode next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, daily, from the UI. Citation analytics name the URL. Essential is $95/mo. Explore is free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts.
We keep GSC as the impression system of record for Google. We keep Promptwatch as the prompt system of record. We buy both. We do not stretch Search Central into chatbot advice.
FAQ
Is there markup that forces an Overview citation?
No. Indexed and snippet-eligible. Anyone selling Overview schema is guessing.
Why did a supporting link not match our target query?
Query fan-out. Read the lawn example in the optimization guide before you change the H1.
Can we opt out of Overviews and keep Search?
Snippet and index controls, as documented. Blocking Googlebot drops you out of Search, including AI features.
What to do this week
- Read both Search Central pages. Bookmark them.
- Confirm money URLs are indexed, snippet-eligible, and not accidentally
nosnippet. - Confirm generative-feature inclusion in Search Console, per the optimization guide.
- Open GSC generative reports for impressions. Do not label them clicks.
- If you also need the prompt and the competing URL, put the same questions in Promptwatch and email hello@1001seomedia.com. We follow the documentation for Google.
