How do I get my website to show up as a source when ChatGPT answers questions in my niche
How our agency gets niche websites cited as sources in ChatGPT: fixing bot access, Bing and IndexNow basics, narrow answer pages, and tracking citations over time.
Niches are easier than they look
Clients in narrow markets often assume ChatGPT will only cite the giants. In our experience the opposite can be true for specific questions. A niche prompt like "what should a three-person law firm look for in intake software" has far fewer good answers online than "best intake software," and a precise page can win it.
That does not make it automatic. Here is the sequence we follow, and why.
First, can ChatGPT's crawlers reach the site
Before we write a word, we check access. OpenAI documents GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. A surprising number of sites block them through a CDN bot rule or a legacy robots.txt line, often by accident.
We confirm with Promptwatch's Agent Analytics, which shows IP-verified AI crawler logs in real time and filters out spoofed user agents. When a bot gets a 403 or a redirect loop, the log shows it with an explanation. The crawl-to-citation path gives a citation rate per page, which helps us see which pages bots fetch and which they actually cite.
Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month, not on Essential. For agencies, they are on every agency plan.
Second, the indexes
Which index feeds a given assistant answer is not fully documented by every vendor, so we do not build a strategy around a single guess. We cover the main ones.
- Google Search Console: relevant for Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: verify the site, submit the sitemap, read the index reports. Bing Webmaster data includes Microsoft Copilot traffic, and the work is quick.
- IndexNow: an open protocol that tells participating search engines when a URL is added, changed or deleted. Many CMS plugins support it. It does not replace good pages, but it shortens the time before a change is seen.
In Promptwatch, Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. We use it to find pages that are indexed but never cited, which is a content question, not an access question.
Third, narrow pages with the answer up front
For a niche, we build content around specific, checkable constraints.
- The audience: size, role, budget, region.
- The decision: what the reader is choosing between.
- The answer: first paragraph, then reasoning.
- The honest limits: who it does not suit.
To find the questions, we use Prompt Explorer, which suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page, then check Prompt Volumes for volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates. We tag prompts by persona, because the same niche question reads differently from a buyer and a practitioner.
Fourth, where engines already look
The citation reports tell us which third-party domains get cited for niche prompts. Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and trade publications each have their own report in Promptwatch, and offsite mentions show where the brand is named without a link.
If a particular niche forum or directory dominates, we plan genuine participation there. We do not recommend fake reviews or astroturfing. Models cite what exists, and what exists should be true.
Fifth, measurement that does not fool you
ChatGPT answers vary by wording, model and place. A single manual check misleads, in both directions. We track a fixed panel of niche prompts, usually 30 to 50, and read Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer over several weeks. Promptwatch runs panels daily per model, country and language.
We also connect traffic. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred visits and conversions through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin. A niche site with modest traffic can still get clear signals from a few dozen AI-referred sessions that convert.
What we put in the first month
- Check bot access against the OpenAI agents and fix blocks.
- Verify Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console, enable IndexNow.
- Build a niche prompt panel, grouped by persona.
- Write or refresh the five pages for the biggest gaps.
- Review cited outside sources and plan participation.
- Check results weekly, and change nothing for at least two weeks after publishing.
What we do not promise
We do not promise citations. Nobody controls them. The honest claim is that fixing access and answering narrow questions well improves the odds, and tracking tells you quickly whether it did. If you want to run the same workflow, Promptwatch is where we do it.
