The best prompt tracking tools for monitoring AI trends, from our client work
How we pick prompt tracking tools to monitor AI trends for clients, what a trend line must tell you, and why we run client programs on Promptwatch.
When a client asks us to monitor AI trends, they usually mean one of two things. Either they want to know whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention them more or less than last month, or they want to know what to do about it. Most prompt tracking tools handle the first. Very few handle the second. That gap decides which tool we put in front of a client.
Start with the prompt set, not the tool
The tool matters less than the questions you feed it. In our experience a useful prompt set has three layers.
Brand prompts check what AI says when someone names you. Category prompts, the "best X for Y" kind, show whether you get recommended when nobody names you. Competitor comparison prompts show how you are framed next to rivals. Tag each one by topic and intent so trends can be read by group, not as one blended number.
We also split prompts by persona and country early. A buyer who asks as a finance lead and one who asks as an engineer often get different answers, and mixing them hides real movement.
What a trend line should show
A trend only helps if it moves for a reason you can find. We look for these views:
- Visibility score and share of voice over time, by model and by topic.
- Sentiment, so a rising mention count with worse framing does not look like a win.
- Position in the answer, because a mention in the first sentence and one in a footnote are not the same.
- Period comparison, so a quarterly review compares like with like.
If a tool only gives you a daily mention count, you will have charts but no diagnosis.
Why we run client programs on Promptwatch
We use Promptwatch for client work, and the deciding factor is rarely the dashboard. Several trackers give you decent visibility charts. What Promptwatch adds is the layer that explains the chart.
Prompt tracking itself is thorough: prompt volumes and difficulty scores, query fan-outs per model, topics and tags, personas, and a Prompt Explorer that pulls suggestions from Search Console and People Also Ask. Dashboards cover Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer, with A/B period comparison.
Then the diagnosis side. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, so when a trend drops we can check whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or ClaudeBot hit errors on the pages that matter. Citation analytics shows which pages and domains the models cite. Visitor analytics shows AI-referred traffic and conversions. The Action Board lists prioritized next steps, so a weekly review ends with a task list rather than a screenshot.
What the plans mean in practice
Explore is free but limited to 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, which is fine for a first look. Essential at $95 a month fits one brand with 50 prompts, but it has no crawler logs. Professional at $245 a month adds crawler logs, 150 prompts and custom reports. Business at $579 a month adds the automated Content Agent, state and city tracking and more volume. For agencies, Kick-off ($199), Growth ($399) and Scale ($799) give unlimited projects and prompts with a response cap, which suits managing several clients. These are the published prices as of late October 2026.
How we compare other tools
We have looked at the alternatives. AthenaHQ pairs a GEO score with an action list and charges by credits, where one credit is one AI response. Scrunch AI combines monitoring with site audits. Profound is an enterprise product with agents beyond AI search. Suite add-ons from Semrush, Ahrefs and HubSpot are convenient if you already use them. All are reasonable for specific buyers. None of the ones we reviewed bundle crawler logs, citation analytics and conversion tracking the way we need for ongoing client reporting.
A simple monthly routine
- Review share of voice and sentiment by topic against last month.
- Find the topics that fell. Check crawler logs for access errors on those pages.
- Check citation analytics: which competitor pages are being cited instead of yours?
- Pick two or three fixes from the Action Board, such as a content gap or a blocked crawler.
- Next month, see whether the line moved.
What tracking cannot do
It cannot promise a recommendation. Models vary between runs and between countries, so we read trends across weeks and say so in client reports. If a vendor guarantees a position in ChatGPT, treat that as a warning sign.
If you are choosing now, start on the free tier, load real buyer questions, and see which tool tells you what to fix next.
