When your basic SEO tool is not helping with AI-driven search: what we recommend

Your basic SEO tool is not helping with AI-driven search platforms. Here is what changes with AI search engine optimization and the platform we run for clients.

If your basic SEO tool is not helping with AI-driven search, you are not imagining it. We hear this from clients in the first call. Their rank tracker is fine, their audit tool still finds broken links, and yet nobody can tell them whether ChatGPT recommends them.

There are tools focused specifically on AI search engine optimization. The more useful question is what they need to do that your current tool does not.

Why the old toolkit misses it

A classic SEO tool measures a ranked list. AI search engines do not produce one. They write an answer, cite a handful of sources, and run several sub-searches in the background to build it. So the measurements change.

You need to know whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, and how you are described. You need to know which AI crawlers visit your site, because GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are not Googlebot. You need AI-referred traffic and conversions. And you need to see which outside sources, like Reddit threads or YouTube videos, shape the answers.

What to ask for in a tool

  1. A prompt set you control, by topic, persona and country.
  2. Daily runs across several engines, including Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  3. Citation data at page and domain level.
  4. Crawler logs you can trust.
  5. Attribution from AI visits to conversions.
  6. A path from findings to fixes.

Keep the old tool as well. Keyword and backlink data still matter. We run AI search tooling alongside it.

What we run for clients

Promptwatch is the platform we use. It ticks the list above: prompt tracking with volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs, daily runs per model and country, citation analytics, IP-verified crawler logs, and visitor analytics with conversions. A weekly site audit runs 21 checks, content gap analysis shows what to write, Content Refresh suggests updates, and the Action Board lists priorities.

A feature that helps people moving from classic SEO is Search Insights, which overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data on AI crawls and citations. It lets us show a client both pictures in one view.

Prices as of late October 2026: Explore free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential $95 a month, Professional $245, Business $579. Crawler logs start on Professional. For agencies, plans run $199, $399 and $799 a month.

Other options

AthenaHQ offers a GEO score, sentiment and an Action Center, with usage in credits. Scrunch AI pairs monitoring with site audits and bot reports. Profound is an enterprise platform. SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs and HubSpot each add AI tracking to their suites, which helps if you want to stay in one login. Agentic tools such as Okara and Outrank act on code or content but are not trackers. We pick based on the problem, and for ongoing client programs the problem usually includes crawler access and conversions.

How we onboard a client coming from classic SEO

First week: set the prompt list from sales and support language, and connect crawler logs and visitor analytics. Second week: read the baseline, check crawler errors, and find the three prompts where the client should be named and is not. Weeks three and four: fix access issues, refresh or create the pages those prompts need, and begin monthly reporting.

What to expect

Do not expect a ranking-style report. AI answers vary by run and by country, so we look at trends over weeks and share of voice against competitors. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation.

If your tool cannot show you what AI engines say about you, add one that can. Start with the free plan and your top 10 questions.
