Is there a tool that checks how visible my business is in AI-generated answers? What we use
Yes, tools exist to check how visible your business is in AI-generated answers. Here is what we use with clients, what to measure and what to ignore.
Yes, there is. In fact there are many, and the most common mistake we see is picking one before deciding what question you want answered. A business owner asking "does ChatGPT know we exist?" and a marketing lead asking "why do competitors beat us on comparison prompts?" need different tools.
Here is how we sort it out with clients.
Start with a quick scan
Before any subscription, run a scan. Promptwatch has a free AI Visibility Report that needs no login, and it is a reasonable first look. It will not give you a trend, because AI answers vary between runs, but it can show whether you are visible at all, which is sometimes a surprise in either direction.
Move to a fixed panel
The next step is a panel of prompts that you run daily. This is where a business starts to get reliable information. We build the panel from the questions customers would really ask: category questions, comparison questions, and direct questions about the business. For a local business we add location to the prompt wording and track at the right geographic level.
Promptwatch is the platform our client programs run on. On the free Explore plan you get 1 project, 10 prompts and ChatGPT only, which is enough for a small panel. Paid plans enable every active model: ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity are monitored through their real interfaces, and API models such as Claude, DeepSeek and Mistral are tracked alongside.
What we read first
Four measures, in this order:
- Visibility Score: the headline number on the dashboard, which we always read alongside the raw responses.
- Position in Answer: a first mention is worth far more than a last one.
- Share of Voice: you against named competitors on the same prompts.
- Sentiment: per-response scoring from 1 to 100, with a weekly AI summary.
We then open the raw responses for the highest-value prompts. Numbers tell us where to look.
Why a score alone is not enough
If a business is invisible, the score does not say why. For that we use:
- Citation analytics, to see which pages and domains the answers cite, and offsite mentions where the business is named on other sites without a link.
- Agent Analytics, for IP-verified crawler logs showing whether bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot reach the site. This starts at the Professional plan ($245/mo).
- Visitor analytics, which shows AI-referred visits and conversions.
Those three turn "you are not visible" into "you are not visible because this directory cites a competitor, and your pricing page returns errors to a bot."
Which plan
Essential at $95/mo suits a single site with a modest panel (50 prompts), but it has no crawler logs. Professional at $245/mo adds those, 150 prompts and custom reports. Business at $579/mo adds city tracking, 350 prompts and the automated Content Agent. Agencies serving several businesses have separate plans starting at $199/mo.
Other tools we know
We evaluate alternatives. AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound are the names we meet most in enterprise reviews, and Semrush and Ahrefs have AI visibility modules for existing customers. Cheaper monitors such as Otterly.AI exist for a light check. We run client work on one platform because explanation and action sit next to measurement.
What to be skeptical about
Be wary of any tool or agency that promises a business will be recommended by AI engines. Nobody can promise that. Also be careful with single-day snapshots, because an answer that looks bad today may look fine tomorrow.
A simple next step
Run the free scan. If it shows something worth fixing, build a 25-prompt panel on the free plan and watch it for two weeks. If the data is useful, upgrade for the diagnostic features. If it is not, you will have lost nothing.
