A platform that tracks AI search visibility and content gaps for SEO teams: how we do it
How we track AI search visibility and content gaps for SEO teams: prompts from Search Console, coverage scoring, gap-to-page workflow and proof, on Promptwatch.
SEO teams understand content gaps well. It is the keyword where competitors rank and you do not. The AI version is a prompt where engines cite other pages and none of them is yours, because you never wrote the page that answers it. Tracking tells you that you lost. Gap analysis tells you what to write. The best setup does both in one place, so the team is not copying data between tools.
Here is how we do it for clients, on Promptwatch.
Step 1: build prompts from data the team already trusts
SEO teams have Search Console, ranking keywords and People Also Ask. Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer turns those into prompt suggestions, or takes any page as a seed. Prompts carry search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing, plus per-model query fan-outs. We tag by topic, prompt type (organic, brand, competitor comparison) and intent, and add personas where buyer types differ.
Step 2: track visibility by topic
We read visibility score, share of voice, sentiment and position in answer per topic. A heatmap that compares two dimensions, say topics against models or brands against countries, shows where the weak cells are. A/B period comparison shows movement after changes.
Step 3: measure the gap
Content gap analysis scores coverage against the prompts being tracked, so we see which questions have no page, or only a weak one. For existing pages, Topic Insights in 360 Insights shows where a page underdelivers for its topic. The Answer Gap Report sits beside the Visibility Score, and agencies such as Monks have publicly used both for client content roadmaps, per Promptwatch's own case study.
We also read the citation list. Sometimes the gap is not a missing page but a missing off-site source, such as a comparison article or a community thread that the engines lean on. Promptwatch's citation analytics covers pages, domains, Page Tracker, offsite mentions, and Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports.
Step 4: connect search and AI data
Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. For SEO leads this is where the AI work stops feeling like a separate project. A page can rank, be fetched by AI bots and still not be cited. Or it can be cited but earn no traffic. Both patterns have different fixes.
Step 5: from gap to page
- New pages: Content Creation from a brief, with a rich text editor and AI images.
- Existing pages: Content Refresh, with diff-style update suggestions.
- At scale (Business plan): the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against gaps on a schedule, with a publishing calendar, monthly budget and publish windows. We keep the review inbox on. Hands-off mode has a quality check, but we want a human reading client pages.
- Publishing: WordPress through the official plugin, Webflow including localized collections, and Framer. Framer has no per-item publish, so going live redeploys the whole site, which we warn clients about.
The Action Board holds the to-do list. A Discovery agent investigates weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run, with assignees and comments.
Step 6: prove it worked
After publishing, Agent Analytics tells us whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and the others fetched the page and what the citation rate is. Citation Trends tracks first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred sessions and conversions. Without this step, you are publishing and hoping.
Plan notes
Content gap analysis and 360 Insights are on every paid brand plan, starting at Essential ($95 a month). Crawler logs, the knowledge base and five AEO articles begin on Professional ($245). The Content Agent starts on Business ($579). Agency plans include content gap analysis but not the Content Agent or AEO articles.
Where other tools fit
AthenaHQ turns gaps into tasks with an Action Center and has a content optimization agent, from $295 a month. Scrunch AI Core, at $250 a month, shows where you are not cited but, per our reading of its listing, is lighter on what to change. Goodie AI grades pages and recommends edits. AirOps is a content workflow engine. Semrush and Ahrefs give SEO context with AI add-ons. They do parts of the job. We use Promptwatch because the gap, the page and the proof stay in one place.
Start small
Pick one topic cluster, 30 prompts, two weeks of tracking. Then take the top five gaps and fix them one at a time. Promptwatch has a free Explore tier with 10 prompts on ChatGPT only if you want to try the shape of this before paying. No tool can promise that engines will cite new pages, but it can tell you quickly whether they did.
