Reddit and YouTube Strategy for AI Citations

An agency method for deciding whether Reddit or YouTube belongs in a GEO program, participating honestly, and measuring citation movement.

Reddit and YouTube should enter a GEO plan because monitored answers cite them, not because every brand has been told to add another social channel. In some categories, answer engines repeatedly use community threads or videos as sources. In others, specialist publications, documentation, or first-party pages matter more. We look at the cited set before recommending production or outreach.

This avoids a common planning error. A team can spend months posting on a large subreddit or building a video schedule while the models and prompts relevant to its buyers cite neither. The reverse also happens: a content team keeps publishing articles even though the answer sources show that product comparisons are forming in community discussions and demonstrations.

Start with the category's citations

We collect citations for a representative prompt set, then filter by model, topic, and date. The first pass is descriptive. Which Reddit communities recur? Which threads appear across several prompts? Which YouTube channels and video formats receive citations? Does the brand appear accurately in those sources, inaccurately, or not at all?

Promptwatch's Reddit and YouTube strategy describes its Socials views for inspecting cited posts, communities, videos, and channels. It is product guidance about how to use Promptwatch data. The actual citations in the client's monitored answers are the evidence we use for the channel decision.

We also preserve the observation date. Social citation patterns can move when models, retrieval systems, and available content change. Promptwatch publishes a live aggregate of social citations by model, but the values on that page can update. A percentage copied from it should be labeled with the retrieval date rather than treated as a permanent market benchmark.

Read the thread before planning Reddit work

A cited Reddit URL is not automatically an opportunity to post. We read the whole thread, its date, community rules, moderation state, and the context in which the model used it. A complaint thread may be useful research but a poor place for a late promotional reply. An archived thread cannot be changed. A recurring recommendation thread may reveal product criteria that the client's own pages fail to explain.

Our Reddit program begins with listening and subject expertise. Staff who participate should use honest identities or disclosures that comply with the community's rules. They should answer questions they can genuinely answer, including questions where the client's product is irrelevant. An account that appears only when its employer can be mentioned creates moderation risk and weakens trust.

When the product fits a recommendation request, the response should explain the fit and its limits. We do not script fake customer stories, coordinate undisclosed praise, buy votes, or bury competitor names. GEO does not turn manipulation into a sound agency tactic. If an existing post contains a factual error about the brand and remains open, a calm correction with a source is more defensible than a sales reply.

Threads also improve prompt research. The wording people use around tradeoffs, setup problems, and alternatives can expose a gap in the monitored set. We add a prompt only when it represents a meaningful question and keep it tagged as community-derived so its origin remains clear.

Build YouTube around useful retrieval

YouTube work starts with the formats already cited for the category. A software audience may need a setup demonstration. A product category may reward comparisons, maintenance guides, or tests. We do not assume that a broad brand film will answer a narrow question just because it has a larger production budget.

Titles and descriptions should state what the video covers in plain language. Accurate captions and a clear spoken explanation make the content easier for people to follow and give retrieval systems more text to work with. Chapters can help navigation when the video covers several questions. None of this excuses a weak answer. The video must still demonstrate or explain something worth citing.

Creator outreach follows the same evidence. A channel that appears in the client's citation set may be relevant, but citation frequency does not prove that its audience, editorial standards, or commercial terms fit the brand. We review the channel, disclose sponsorships, give creators room for an honest assessment, and never promise a citation as the outcome.

Promptwatch's fixed February 2026 YouTube citation report illustrates why model-level analysis matters. In that dated dataset, Perplexity citations included YouTube at 2.74% and Google AI Overviews at 2.25%, while ChatGPT was 0.05%. The same report says nearly 80% of cited videos had fewer than 100,000 views and 54% were more than two years old. These are Promptwatch's published observations for February 1 through 28, 2026, not findings from our clients and not a forecast. We use them to form questions, then inspect the client's own category.

Measure citations, mentions, and business response

The work log records the post, video, or collaboration; publication date; disclosure; target question; and related monitored prompts. We then watch whether the asset enters the cited set, which models use it, and whether answers start mentioning the brand in the intended context. A citation to a video that never names the client is not brand visibility.

Timing needs restraint. New material may take time to be discovered and used. We do not report failure after a few days or claim causation from one answer. Monthly review is usually more useful for this channel than reacting to every response change.

Traffic is another layer. A cited social source can influence an answer without sending a click to the client's site. Where links and analytics permit measurement, we track identified visits and downstream actions in the client's systems. We do not invent a value for untracked influence.

We use Promptwatch in client programs because it separates Reddit and YouTube citations and lets us connect them to monitored prompts and brand mentions. The recommendation is earned only when the source mix supports it. The next action might be community participation, a focused video, a correction, or no social work at all, and the citation record should make that choice visible.
