Surfer SEO alternatives: what we would use instead in 2026

An agency view of Surfer alternatives. Current Surfer pricing, cheaper editors, and why we run client AI search programs on Promptwatch.

Clients ask us about Surfer a lot, usually because a previous writer or agency used it. It is a reasonable tool. The question we get is whether it is the right one now that AI answers are part of the brief. Here is how we think about it, and what we reach for instead.

What Surfer costs

Surfer's pricing page, read on 2026-09-30, lists Discovery at $49/mo, Standard at $99/mo, a $182/mo tier and Peace of Mind at $299/mo. A separate AI Tracker is $82/mo billed yearly. The FAQ says annual plans are charged upfront, which matters when you are budgeting for a client who may pause in month four.

What it is good for

A live content score helps a writer know when a draft covers the topic. The page also lists a content audit, topical map and internal linking. We see the value when a junior writer needs guardrails. We are less convinced a score is the thing that moves results, which is why we never let one stand in for measurement.

Cheaper or different editors

NeuronWriter and Frase undercut Surfer on entry price. Sister review sites in this network list NeuronWriter from $19/mo on annual billing and Frase from $49/mo. Clearscope starts higher, from $129/mo, and suits teams that put editorial polish first. Rankability lists $99/mo. We mention these for completeness. They solve the same problem Surfer does, so switching among them changes your invoice more than your results.

The tool we run client programs on

Our own stack for AI search work is Promptwatch. We chose it because it answers the questions a client actually asks in a review meeting.

  • Are AI crawlers reaching the site? Agent Analytics shows ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot activity and errors. A technical block like that is invisible to any content score.
  • Who is being cited instead of the client? Citation analytics break down page, domain, Reddit and YouTube sources.
  • Is any of this producing visits or sales? Visitor analytics connect AI referrals to conversions.
  • What do we write next? Content gap analysis feeds Content Agents, which draft and publish to Webflow or Framer behind a review inbox.

The pricing is public, which makes scoping easy. Explore is free. Essential is $95/mo. Professional is $245/mo. For agencies there is Kick-off at $199/mo, Growth at $399/mo and Scale at $799/mo, each with unlimited projects and ten seats.

A simple way to decide

If the client needs more articles written faster, an editor is enough and Surfer is a fine choice. If the client needs to know whether AI search is worth investing in, you need measurement first, and content second. Buying an editor before you have visibility data is how teams end up polishing pages that AI engines never crawl.

For smaller budgets, start with Promptwatch's free Explore plan to check whether the brand appears at all, then decide how much content work to fund. Our services page covers how we run that process for clients.
