Top AI share of voice tracking tools in 2026: what we use and what we have tested

Our agency view on top AI share of voice tracking tools in 2026: what to demand from a tracker, how we report the number, and why we run client work on Promptwatch.

Share of voice tracking tools multiplied this year, and almost all of them report a version of the number. As an agency, we do not choose among them on the number. We choose on whether we can defend it in a client meeting and whether it points to a next action. This is our view of what to demand, and why our client programs run on Promptwatch.

What a defensible tracker needs

Control over the prompt panel. If we cannot choose, label and freeze the prompts, we cannot defend the trend. Promptwatch lets us group prompts by topic, tag and type (organic, brand, competitor comparison) and apply personas.

Control over the competitor list. We agree it with the client. We need to merge name variants and add rivals, and it helps when the tool can suggest competitors we missed. Promptwatch has auto-discovered competitors, brand aliases and brand merging.

Per-engine reporting. A blended figure hides too much. We want to see share by engine, by topic and by country, which the heatmap in Promptwatch supports by comparing any two dimensions.

Sentiment and position, not just presence. A mention in a warning is not a win. Promptwatch scores sentiment per response from 1 to 100, reports position in the answer and writes a weekly summary.

A cadence the client can trust. Promptwatch runs panels daily per model, country and language. For client reporting, that makes the weekly and monthly averages smoother than a single weekly run.

An explanation. This is where most trackers stop and where we have changed tools. When share drops, the client asks why. Citation analytics show which sources changed, Agent Analytics shows whether crawlers could still reach the pages, and visitor analytics show whether AI traffic moved too.

How we run a share of voice program

  1. Agree the panel and competitors in writing. We store both with the first report.
  2. Run two weeks before reporting. The first numbers settle slowly.
  3. Report organic share first. Branded prompts inflate it. Organic prompts show whether the client is discovered.
  4. Use A/B period comparison. Month on month, same panel.
  5. Attach a cause to every movement. A source gained or lost, a crawler error, a competitor page that appeared.
  6. Turn causes into actions. The Action Board produces a prioritized list, and its Discovery agent runs weekly and suggests evidence-backed actions.

Mistakes we have seen in other people's reports

  • Reporting share from a panel that includes the client's name in half the prompts.
  • Changing the competitor list quietly between months.
  • Comparing a number from one tool this quarter with a number from another next quarter.
  • Reading a single day. AI answers vary between runs.
  • Promising a target share. Nobody controls what an engine says.

Other tools we have tested

We trial alternatives regularly. Mentionable is a competent daily tracker for seven engines in euros with share per competitor and prompt. Ceyo reports a Share of Answer per model and query, with a project ladder aimed at agencies. AthenaHQ offers a GEO score and an action center at a higher price, billed by credit. Allmond covers 67+ countries on a weekly or monthly schedule, which suits wide surveys. Semrush and Ahrefs add AI modules for teams already living there, and their prompts are generated or modeled from keyword data, so we treat them as directional. Evertune's large-sample approach is interesting for big-brand perception work.

We use these as references when a client asks. For ongoing programs we stay on Promptwatch because the share of voice number lives beside the citation reports, crawler logs and visitor analytics that explain it.

What we tell clients

A share of voice number is a sample from a panel and a set of engines at a given time. It moves between runs and between countries. We commit to a stable method, a monthly report with causes, and a list of actions. We do not commit to a share target, because no tracker or agency controls what an AI engine says.

When you evaluate a tracker, run the same panel through two tools for a fortnight and ask which one lets you explain the differences. The tool that does is the one that will survive a client's tough questions.
