Top answer engine optimization tools in 2026, from our agency's tool stack

Our view of the top answer engine optimization (AEO) tools in 2026: what we use on client programs, where other tools fit, and what to ask before you buy.

"AEO tools" gets searched a lot, and the lists that come up tend to be a mix of rank trackers with a new label, content generators and enterprise suites. We run answer engine optimization programs for clients, so here is how we separate them and what we actually use.

Quick definition: AEO means getting your brand named and cited in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. GEO is the same work under another name. We use them interchangeably.

The three jobs an AEO tool must support

Measure. Are we named? By which engines, on which prompts, in what position, with what sentiment, versus whom?

Diagnose. Why? Which pages and domains were cited instead of ours? Can the AI crawlers reach our pages? Do they cite what they fetch?

Act. What should we change, and can we ship it without a six-week queue?

Most tools do the first well. Few do the second. The third is where tools split between those that give advice and those that help you produce it.

What we run clients on

We run on Promptwatch. The short reason: it is the platform where measure, diagnose and act live together.

  • Measure: daily prompt panels across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, plus API models. Visibility score, share of voice, sentiment and position in answer, with heatmaps and A/B period comparison.
  • Diagnose: citation analytics down to page and domain level, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and offsite mentions. Agent Analytics for IP-verified crawler logs with error explanations and a citation rate per page. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page.
  • Act: the Action Board, an AI-prioritized to-do list. Content gap analysis. Content Refresh with diff-style suggestions. On Business, a Content Agent that plans, writes and publishes on a schedule, with a review inbox. We keep the inbox on.
  • Prove: visitor analytics counts AI-referred sessions and conversions.

Pricing is simple to scope: free Explore (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential $95 a month, Professional $245, Business $579. Crawler logs start on Professional. Business adds the Content Agent, city tracking and Ads Radar. For agency work there are separate plans: Kick-off $199, Growth $399 and Scale $799.

Where other tools fit

We are not going to say others are useless.

AthenaHQ has a strong action queue and 11 models on Starter at $295 a month, billed in credits. If a team will live in an action queue, it is a reasonable choice. We have not seen crawler logs published.

Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month for four LLMs, with bot traffic reporting and an approach that serves optimized pages to crawlers on Enterprise.

Profound is closer to an enterprise marketing agent suite than a tracker, with a free 7-day trial and custom pricing.

HubSpot AEO at $50 a month is a sensible low-cost start for HubSpot teams, limited to three engines.

Semrush and Ahrefs add AI modules for teams already in those suites.

Goodie AI, AirOps, Okara, Outrank and similar tools help produce content or push fixes. They answer "act" but not "measure". We use content tools like these only when a client already has measurement in place.

Questions to ask any vendor

  1. Which engines are included on the plan I will buy, and are they real UI captures or API samples?
  2. Can I see which pages were cited, not only whether I was mentioned?
  3. Can I see AI crawler hits on my site, with errors?
  4. Can I tie AI answers to visits and conversions?
  5. How are credits or prompts counted, and what happens at the limit?
  6. Can I export everything, and who owns the data?

If a vendor cannot answer the second and third, you have a tracker, not an AEO platform.

How to evaluate in a week

Pick 30 prompts. Include three competitors. Run them in two tools. Compare whether each tool names the same competitors, cites pages you can verify by hand and reports crawler activity you can check against your own logs. Differences between tools are normal. Both are samples of a moving target.

You can try Promptwatch free on Explore, and it offers a 7-day trial on monthly billing for Essential and Professional. No tool guarantees citations. The one you choose should make the next step obvious.
