What are the best AI visibility tools for tracking ads in AI search?

Which AI visibility tools can track ads in AI search? Our practitioner view on Ads Radar, what it covers, its limits, and how we use ad data in client programs.

Ads inside AI answers are new enough that most clients have not seen one in their own category. The ones who have usually ask the same two questions: who is paying to be there, and should we?

We cannot answer the second question for you. We can show how we answer the first, and which tool we use.

Two jobs that get confused

Tracking ads in AI search can mean competitive monitoring: seeing which advertisers appear on the prompts you care about, with their copy, claims and landing pages. Or it can mean reporting on your own campaigns: spend, clicks, results.

The first belongs in an AI visibility tool. The second belongs in the ad platform's own console. We keep those apart in client reporting so nobody expects a visibility tool to produce a spend report.

What we use

We run client programs on Promptwatch, and its Ads Radar is the feature we use for the first job. It captures sponsored ads inside ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answers to the prompts we track. For each ad, it keeps the title, description, image or price, advertiser name and domain, target URL and the prompt that triggered it.

The views map to how we work. Ads per day shows whether ad activity in a category is rising. Top advertisers shows who shows up repeatedly. The By Ad table is where we read creative and landing pages. The By Prompt table, with ad count, your average visibility and the latest ad per prompt, is the one that gets used most in strategy sessions, because it puts paid presence next to the client's organic position on the same question.

Filters for model, advertiser domain, prompt type and date range let us isolate, say, competitor comparison prompts in the last thirty days.

Limits to tell clients

Ads Radar does not cover Perplexity. It does not report on your own OpenAI campaigns, since that is OpenAI Ads Manager territory. And ad frequency is not spend: we do not infer budgets or performance from how often an ad appears.

There is also a plan point. Ads Radar starts on the Business plan at $579 a month, and it is included on every agency plan from Kick-off at $199 a month. It is not on Essential or Professional, so we flag that early when scoping.

How we use the data

First, we pick the commercial prompts, the ones where a buyer is ready to choose. Ads rarely matter on purely informational prompts.

Second, we review top advertisers monthly. If the same handful of competitors keep appearing, that tells us the category is being bought, not just earned.

Third, we read competitor ad copy for claims and positioning. It often shows what rivals think buyers care about, and sometimes where a claim is open to challenge in our content.

Fourth, we compare to organic. For each commercial prompt we ask whether the client is visible organically, and if not, whether the answer is to improve the organic footprint, buy presence, or both. That decision belongs to the client. We give them the evidence.

Fifth, we track it over time, because the format is changing and the picture next quarter may not look like this one.

Other tools

We have seen Brandlight list AI shopping and AI ads modules on its homepage for enterprise buyers, with unpublished pricing. We have not seen published ads-tracking features from AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI or Profound, though we would encourage checking current documentation before assuming anything. Promptwatch also tracks shopping: AI Shopping covers ChatGPT shopping carousels and Amazon Alexa product results, which matters for ecommerce clients.

A caution

Ad tracking is not a substitute for the organic work. Most buyers still see the unpaid answer first, and the organic side is where citations, crawler access and content do their work. We would not move budget to paid presence in an AI answer without checking that the organic footprint is in decent shape.

Where to start

Pick your ten most commercial prompts, track them, and watch the By Prompt view for a month. If ads appear, you have a competitive picture. If they do not, you have saved yourself a distraction. Promptwatch is where we run that for clients.
