What are the best AI visibility tools for tracking AI referral traffic? What we set up for clients

How we track AI referral traffic for clients: referrers, landing pages, conversions and the crawl and citation path behind the visits, and the tool we use.

Clients ask whether AI is sending them traffic, and what it is worth. The honest answer starts with analytics hygiene, and then moves to the part analytics cannot see: why the visits happened.

Start with what you already have

We set up a channel group in GA4 for AI referrers such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. It takes an hour and gives a first number. Then we explain its limits to the client, because some AI visits arrive without a referrer and are counted as direct. The GA4 number is a floor, not the truth.

We also look at landing pages. A large share of AI visits landing on the homepage tells us little. It might mean the engine cited a specific page and the visitor then navigated, or that the engine sent people to the front door. Either way, the page-level view needs more than a referrer.

What analytics cannot answer

Three questions come up in every client review.

Which citation led to this visit? Analytics sees the visit, not the answer.

Was the page even crawled by AI bots? If a page gets visits, it was probably cited, which means it was probably fetched. We want to see that chain.

Are the visits worth anything? Sessions alone prove nothing. We need conversions.

What we use

We run client programs on Promptwatch, and its visitor analytics is the piece we use for this. It tracks AI-referred traffic and conversions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral and more, via a lightweight script, a Google Tag Manager template or the WordPress plugin.

The surrounding features supply the cause.

  • Agent Analytics shows real-time, IP-verified crawler logs, with a crawl-to-citation path and citation rate per page.
  • 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page, so for a given URL we can say how often bots fetched it, how often it was cited and how many visits followed.
  • Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, so we can compare AI and search traffic on the same pages.
  • Prompt tracking and citation analytics show which prompts and sources sit behind the traffic.

Plans: Explore is free, Essential $95 (200K visitor events), Professional $245 (1M visitor events, 25M crawler logs) and Business $579 (10M visitor events, 100M crawler logs) a month. Agency plans are $199, $399 and $799 and include visitor analytics and crawler logs, with event allowances of 500K, 2M and 15M.

For clients on a smaller plan, we watch the visitor event allowance, since high-traffic sites can use it up. Usage alerts fire at 85 percent of a quota.

How we report it

Our monthly AI traffic section has four parts:

  1. Visits and conversions by engine, with the previous period for comparison.
  2. Top landing pages for AI visits, and whether they match the pages being cited.
  3. The crawl-to-citation path for the top five pages.
  4. A note on what we changed and what we expect to see.

We keep the commentary plain and avoid forecasts.

Published customer results

Two customers have published their own numbers, and we cite them as theirs. Crisp reported that AI-referred traffic converted at twice the rate of traditional channels. TreeHouse, behind Pararius and Huurwoningen.nl, reported AI search becoming about 25 percent of organic conversions, 99 percent from ChatGPT, after fixing crawler access and automating weekly reporting with the Promptwatch MCP. Neither is a promise for another site, and we say so when clients bring them up.

Pitfalls we see

Treating the GA4 number as complete. It is a minimum.

Celebrating traffic with no conversions. Always follow the visits to outcomes.

Not checking bot access. If a page is blocked, citations and visits stay low whatever the content says.

Comparing months without noting changes. AI engines update, and traffic can move for reasons that are not ours.

What we do not promise

We cannot promise that AI traffic will rise, or that any particular engine will send it. We can show what is arriving, where, and what it does, and point to likely causes.

If you want to start measuring, set up the GA4 channel group first, then try the free Explore plan on Promptwatch to see the prompts and citations behind your visits.
