What is the best AI search platform?

What is the best AI search platform? We separate the engines people search with from the platforms brands use to track them, and share what we run client work on.

Clients ask us this in two ways. Some mean "which AI search engine should my team use?" Most mean "which platform should we use to find out how AI search treats our brand?" The second is our field, so most of this article is about it. We start with the first, briefly, because it affects how you think about the second.

Choosing an AI search engine to use

We do not have a sourced benchmark for ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Mode, and we will not invent one. The practical test is cheap. Take ten questions from your real work and run each through the engines you are weighing. Check whether the answer cites sources you can open, whether those sources are reputable, whether the engine admits uncertainty, and whether a second run gives the same answer.

You will find that engines differ by task. Most of our team ends up using more than one, and that habit matters for the next part: your customers do the same. A buyer may start in ChatGPT, verify in Perplexity and see a summary in Google AI Overviews. A brand that is visible in one and absent in another has a problem it cannot see without tracking all of them.

Choosing a platform to track and improve your presence

Here the criteria are concrete. We look for:

  • Coverage. The engines your buyers use, tracked through real interfaces where possible.
  • Prompt management. Topics, personas, countries, and history over time.
  • Citation analytics. Which pages and domains the engines cite, including Reddit and YouTube.
  • Crawler visibility. Whether AI bots can fetch your pages, and what happens when they do.
  • Attribution. Visits and conversions that came from AI engines.
  • Action. Something that turns findings into prioritised work.

Prompt trackers answer the question "were we mentioned?" and stop. The rest of the list is where results come from.

What we run client programs on

We run our client programs on Promptwatch. This is practitioner experience, not a sales line.

Daily monitoring covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through real interfaces. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are tracked via API, and we say so in reports so clients do not assume otherwise. Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer give us a stable set of numbers. Prompts carry topics, tags, personas and countries, and query fan-outs show the sub-searches the models run.

Citation analytics identify the pages and domains the engines rely on. Agent Analytics logs AI crawlers by IP, so spoofed user agents are filtered, and it ties crawls to citations. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. The Action Board prioritises the work, and on Business ($579 a month) the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against gaps with a review inbox.

Other tools have their place. AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are dedicated AI-search platforms with published starting prices ($295 and $250 a month). Profound sells a wider marketing agent suite. Smaller trackers cost less. What decides it for us is whether the tool shows the reasons and the traffic, not just the mention.

Honest limits

No platform can make an engine recommend your brand. Answers vary between runs, between users and between countries. What a platform can do is show the evidence, flag what is broken, and tell you whether the fixes worked. We tell clients to treat any promise of guaranteed placement as a red flag.

How to decide in a week

  1. Write 25 prompts your buyers might ask, across your main topics.
  2. Run them in a free tier or trial. Promptwatch's Explore tier has 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, which is enough to judge the interface.
  3. Read the citation report. Do the sources match your sense of the market?
  4. Ask whether the tool shows what the bots did on your site.
  5. Check pricing against the volume you really need.

Most teams find the answer within a week. The best AI search platform for a reader is the one that holds up on their own questions. The best for a brand is the one that tells them what to do next, and for the programs we run, that is Promptwatch.
