What's the best AI visibility tool for car dealerships? What we use

How we approach AI visibility for car dealerships: local prompts, city and coordinate tracking, source analysis and the Promptwatch features that fit a dealer group.

Dealerships are one of the more interesting verticals for AI visibility, because almost every question a car shopper asks is local. Nobody wants the best service department in the abstract. They want it within twenty minutes of their house.

That shapes everything about how we measure and what we look for in a tool. Here is our approach, and an honest account of where tracking helps and where it does not.

Start with the questions shoppers actually ask

The prompts that matter for a dealership are rarely generic. We write them around the full ownership cycle:

  • Buying: "best dealer near [city] for a certified pre-owned SUV."
  • Leasing: "where to lease an electric car in [metro area]."
  • Trading in: "best place to trade in a car in [city]."
  • Service: "which dealership in [city] has a good service department."
  • Trust: "is [dealer name] reputable."

We also separate brand prompts, where the dealer is named, from organic ones, where it is not. The organic ones are the ones that bring in new customers. In Promptwatch, topics, tags and prompt types keep these apart, and Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console and People Also Ask, which gets us closer to real wording than a brainstorm does.

Location is the whole game

A national visibility score is nearly useless for a dealership. The answer to "best dealer near me" changes with the place, so tracking has to follow.

Country-level tracking is on every paid plan, which is not enough here. State and city tracking starts on the Business plan at $579 a month, and it is on every agency plan. For tighter targeting there is local GEO and SEO targeting, which pins a monitor to exact coordinates with a radius from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. That is available on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. Other models fall back to country, state or city.

For a dealer group, we set up tracking per store and compare. It is common for one rooftop to be named often and a sister store ten miles away to be missing, and that difference is where the investigation starts.

Why a store is or is not named

Once we see a gap, the diagnosis follows the same path as any other client.

Sources. Citation analytics show page and domain level citations, and Reddit and YouTube reports cover communities and video. For local queries the cited sources can include directories, review sites and local publications as well as the dealer's own pages, so we read the list before assuming it is a website problem. Offsite mentions show where the brand is named without a link.

Access. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, including GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, with errors and a crawl-to-citation path per page. Dealer sites can be heavy on scripts and inventory pages, so we check that the pages we care about are being fetched without errors. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month, and agency plans include them.

Content. Content gap analysis scores where coverage is thin. For a dealership that might mean pages for a specific model, a service offer or a neighborhood that the engines never find. Content generation and publishing to WordPress, Webflow or Framer help us fill those gaps, with an editor reviewing every page. On agency plans, which do not include the automated Content Agent, we draft through our own writers.

Outcomes. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred visits and conversions, so we can see whether a model page that started getting cited produced form fills.

What the tool cannot do

We put this in writing for dealer clients. A visibility platform does not manage your listings, your reviews or your vehicle inventory feeds. Those are separate jobs, and several local marketing platforms cover them. If those basics are wrong, AI engines will repeat the errors. Tracking shows you the symptoms, and we send clients to fix the sources.

It also cannot guarantee that an engine will name a dealership. It can show where the store stands, why, and what to fix first.

Choosing a plan

For a single store with a modest budget, Professional at $245 a month gives 150 prompts and 18,000 responses plus crawler logs, but not city tracking. For city tracking on a brand plan you need Business. For a group or an agency serving several dealers, agency plans from $199 a month give unlimited projects and prompts with city tracking included, and coordinate targeting on Scale at $799. We would test with the free Explore tier first only if ChatGPT alone is enough for a first look.

For our dealership work, Promptwatch is where the local tracking, source analysis and crawler data sit together, and that is the main reason we use it.
