What tools track visibility in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode? How we monitor both for clients

How we track client visibility in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: surface-level monitoring, local targeting, Search Console overlays, and the tools behind it.

Clients tend to treat Google's AI features as an extension of SEO, and they are partly right. The same pages feed them, and the same Search Console account shows the traffic. But AI Overviews and AI Mode behave differently enough from classic results that rank tracking alone cannot tell you where a brand stands. This is how we monitor them, and which tools we lean on.

Treat them as two surfaces

AI Overviews appear above or within standard results. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience. Some tools merge them and some list them separately. We prefer separate tracking, because a brand can show up in one and not the other, and the fix is not always the same.

When we evaluate a tool for Google AI, we check:

  • Whether both surfaces are tracked by name.
  • Whether capture happens in the real interface.
  • Whether location can be set, since Google answers vary by place.
  • Whether Search Console data can sit next to the AI data.
  • How often prompts run.

What we run on

We run client programs on Promptwatch. It monitors Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode through the real interface, alongside ChatGPT (Search), Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI. Prompts run daily per model, country and language.

Location. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking start on Business and are on every agency plan. The newer Local GEO/SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates, from 20 m to 5 km, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. It is available on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. For a client with several branches, this is the first time we can ask what the answer looks like near a specific location rather than guess.

Search Insights. This overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. When a client asks whether AI Overviews are eating their clicks, we can look at the same pages in one place. We are careful about conclusions. Overlay shows co-movement, not cause.

Citations. We read which pages and domains are cited in AI Overview and AI Mode answers, with URL positions, and compare against competitors. The Page Tracker lets us follow specific URLs.

Crawler logs. The IP-verified logs include Google-Agent and GoogleOther among the tracked bots. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month. Essential has none.

Ads. Ads Radar captures sponsored ads inside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus ChatGPT Search, for tracked prompts. It is on Business and every agency plan, not on Professional.

How we set up a client

  1. Prompt panel. Built from Search Console queries, ranking keywords and People Also Ask using Prompt Explorer, then tagged by topic and intent.
  2. Location rules. Country first. State, city or coordinates for local businesses.
  3. Baseline. Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer for each Google surface.
  4. Citation review. Who is cited, and what do those pages do that ours do not?
  5. Weekly check, monthly change. Answers vary between runs, so we look at trends.

Other tools we compare against

Clients on an SEO suite often ask whether the add-on is enough. Ahrefs Brand Radar covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in its AI Visibility Index and retests monthly. SE Ranking tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, with one check meaning one prompt on one engine. Semrush's AI Toolkit lists Google AI Overviews among its engines. They are reasonable first looks when the team already works there. They add less on crawler evidence and visitor conversions.

Among dedicated trackers, AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound each have different engine coverage, and Scrunch's Core plan names Google AI Overviews but not AI Mode. Lower-cost trackers such as LLM Pulse and Ceyo list both Google surfaces, with trade-offs in cadence or models per plan.

What we tell clients

We cannot control what Google shows. Answers vary by location, device and time, so every tool shows a sample. We report trends and evidence, and we flag when a result is a single run. For the Google side specifically, Promptwatch is the platform where we do that, because the surface-level tracking, location targeting and Search Console overlay live together.
