Which software tracks local AI search results for multi-location brands? How we do it
How we track local AI search results for multi-location brands: location targeting, per-city prompts, citation sources and when a listings tool is the better fix.
Multi-location brands present a problem that single-site clients do not. The head office wants one number. Each store manager wants to know why a competitor down the street gets recommended and they do not. Both are right, and a single brand-level score satisfies neither.
Here is how we track local AI search for these clients, and where the software choices really matter.
Split the problem in two
We separate two jobs that tools often blur together.
The first is measurement by place: for a given prompt, asked from a given spot, which brands does the engine name? The second is fixing the cause: wrong hours, thin location pages, missing citations, crawlers that cannot reach store pages. A tool that measures well but does not help with the cause leaves the manager with a number and no next step.
Measurement by place
Promptwatch handles location in layers. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking begins on Business and is included on every agency plan. Local GEO/SEO targeting, introduced in October 2026, pins a monitor to exact coordinates with a radius from 20 m to 5 km, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. It is available on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. For other models the monitor falls back to country, state or city, and we note that in reports so nobody over-reads the data.
We do not track every store. We pick representative locations: the flagship, a mid-size market, a small town, and one where the brand is known to struggle. That gives a sense of variation without hundreds of prompt runs.
Writing local prompts
Locals do not ask "what is the best [brand]?" They ask things like "dentist open Saturday near me" or "best Italian place for a group in [neighbourhood]". We write prompts the way customers phrase them, with intent such as "open now", "affordable" and "near me", and keep branded prompts in their own group. Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords or People Also Ask, which gives us a starting list drawn from real demand.
Reading local results
We compare each location's results against the brand-level baseline. If one city is much worse, we look at two things. First, citation analytics: which directories, local publications and review sites do the engines cite there, and is the client present on them? Offsite mentions find pages that name the brand without a link. Second, crawler logs: does AI crawling reach the location pages? Agent Analytics provides real-time, IP-verified logs, so we can see when bots hit store pages or fail on them. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245/mo).
Many local gaps are not about content at all. They are inconsistent addresses, missing profiles and duplicated listings. This is where listings and reputation platforms earn their place. Uberall, Yext, Birdeye, Reputation, BrightLocal and Synup all offer AI modules by location, and Local Falcon runs geo-grid scans from 9 to 441 points. We are happy to recommend them when listings accuracy is the problem. They do not replace crawler logs and brand-wide citation analysis, which is why our client programs run on Promptwatch with a listings tool alongside where needed.
Content for locations
When the cause is thin or missing location content, the Content Agent (Business and up) can plan, write and publish against gaps with a review inbox, publishing to WordPress, Webflow or Framer. We keep a human editor on every location page, because generic city-swapped text is easy for engines and readers to spot. Content Refresh gives diff-style suggestions for existing pages, which is usually the faster win.
Structure for agencies and big brands
Agency plans give unlimited projects, unlimited prompts and 10 seats, which makes it practical to separate regions or franchisees into their own projects with their own reports. Custom reports and the Looker Studio connector keep regional managers looking at their own slice.
Limits
No software can guarantee a store gets recommended. Local answers vary with phrasing, place and run. We report trends over weeks and keep promises modest.
A simple pilot
Choose four locations. Write 15 local-style prompts. Track them for three weeks. Compare each location with the baseline, read the citation sources for the worst performer, and check crawler logs for its page. Fix the cheapest cause first. You can start with country-level tracking on a 7-day trial of Promptwatch, though city and coordinate targeting need Business, which has no trial.
