Which tools can track ads showing up in AI chatbot answers like ChatGPT and Perplexity: what we use, what it covers and where coverage stops.
Clients started asking about ads in AI answers as soon as they began seeing them. The questions are usually: who is paying to appear next to our prompts, what are they saying, and does it hurt our organic mentions? Here is how we track it, and where we run out of coverage.
Two different jobs
First, a distinction that saves confusion. Watching other advertisers' ads in AI answers is competitive intelligence. Running your own campaigns is media buying, and it happens in the platform's own ads manager. A visibility platform helps with the first. It does not replace the second.
What we track
For the prompts that matter commercially, we want:
- Which advertisers appear, by name and domain.
- The ad copy and claims.
- The landing page.
- How often ads show up, by day and by prompt.
- Our own organic visibility on the same prompts.
That last item is the one clients overlook. An ad above an answer is competing for the same attention as your organic mention, so you need to read them together.
The tool we use
We run client programs on Promptwatch, and the relevant feature is Ads Radar. It captures sponsored ads inside ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answers to tracked prompts. For each it records the title, description, image or price, advertiser name and domain, target URL and the prompt that triggered it. The views we use are Ads per day, Top advertisers, a By Ad table and a By Prompt table, which shows ad count, your average visibility and the latest ad for each prompt. Filters cover model, advertiser domain, prompt type and date range.
Be clear about what it does not do, because clients ask. It does not cover Perplexity, so if a client's buyers are heavy Perplexity users we say that this view has a gap. It does not report on your own OpenAI campaigns, which live in OpenAI Ads Manager.
Plan note: Ads Radar starts on the Business plan ($579 a month) and is on every agency plan (Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799). It is not on Essential or Professional. We have seen that mistake in older material, so check before you budget.
How we use ad data
Map which prompts attract ads. Not all do. Ads cluster around commercial prompts such as comparisons and "best X" questions. The By Prompt table makes the pattern visible.
List the advertisers. Top advertisers shows who is actually buying. Sometimes it is a direct competitor. Sometimes it is a marketplace or an aggregator we had not considered.
Read the copy. Which claims do they lead with? Which landing pages? That feeds our own messaging and comparison pages.
Compare with organic. On prompts with heavy ad activity, how does our visibility behave? If we are cited organically and a competitor holds the paid slot, we check that our cited page answers the question well.
Track over time. Ad presence moves. We look at the weekly picture rather than a single day.
Where organic still matters
Ads do not replace being cited. Citation analytics shows which pages engines use for the same prompts, and crawler logs (from the Professional plan) show whether bots can read those pages. We treat paid and organic as two views of one prompt, and the same panel feeds both. The Action Board can turn findings into tasks, such as refreshing a page that competitors' ads now outrank.
What we tell clients about Perplexity
Our honest position is that we have no ad capture view for it in this setup. We track organic visibility and citations on Perplexity as usual, and we check ads there manually when it matters. If a vendor claims to track ads on every engine, we ask for a live demonstration.
Limits
Ad formats in AI products are evolving and policies change. Tools capture what appears for the prompts you track, from the locations and settings they use. They do not see every ad every user sees. We report this as a sample, not a census.
Where to start
Choose your twenty most commercial prompts, turn on tracking and let it run for two weeks. Read the By Prompt table first. You will learn quickly whether ads are a real factor in your category, or noise.
