Affordable AI Rank Tracker for Small Businesses: Pricing

An honest price ladder for small businesses tracking ChatGPT and AI Overviews, from free to about $100 a month, and the one question cheap trackers cannot answer.

Small business owners ask us for the cheapest AI rank tracker more than any other tool question. It is a fair ask. A dental practice, a local accountant or a two-person ecommerce shop does not have an enterprise software budget, and nobody wants to pay $500 a month to learn that ChatGPT has never heard of them.

So here is the honest price ladder, using published prices only. Then we explain where we think a small business should actually spend, and why the cheapest option is sometimes the expensive one.

Decide what you need to know first

There are two different questions hiding inside "AI rank tracking."

The first is whether you appear. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best bookkeeper in their city, does your name come up, and does the answer link to your site? That is a monitoring question. Plenty of cheap tools answer it.

The second is whether it matters. Did anyone click through from that answer, and did they book, buy or call? A small business cannot afford to optimize for a channel that sends nobody. That second question needs visitor analytics tied to AI referrals, and that is where the price ladder splits.

Promptwatch's ladder for a small business

Promptwatch is the platform we run client programs on, small ones included. Its ladder is shorter than people expect.

Explore is free: 10 prompts, ChatGPT only, 1 project, 1 seat. We use it in a first workshop so an owner can see their own answers without a purchase order. It is not a working program, because it covers one engine.

Essential is $95 a month with a 7-day trial. You get 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, 200K visitor events and 5 AEO articles, across the paid engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and others), monitored through their real interfaces rather than an API. On annual billing you pay 10 months for 12, so $950 a year.

Professional at $245 a month is the first brand plan with crawler logs (25M). Most small businesses do not need it on day one. We move a client up when we need to see whether ChatGPT's or Perplexity's crawler is fetching the pages we want cited.

The cheaper trackers, by published price

These prices come from the vendor pages recorded in our review catalog. Credit and check systems differ, so read the unit before you compare totals.

  • Rankscale Essentials is $20 a month for 120 credits across all engines, with GEO site audits. Pro is $99 a month for 1,200 credits.
  • LLMrefs has a free tier with limited tracking. Pro is $79 a month, marked as limited-time pricing, for 10+ engines and 500 prompts.
  • SE Ranking sells AI tracking as an $89 a month add-on with 200 checks, on top of a core suite plan (around $129 a month for Pro). One check is one prompt on one engine, so 200 checks covers 40 prompts across 5 engines once.
  • Mangools AI Search Watcher is included in Mangools plans, but the plan prices are not published on the watcher page.
  • Encited Basic is $19 a month for 1 site and 3 prompts tracking ChatGPT. Essential is $39 a month annually ($49 monthly) for 15 AI visibility prompts and crawl log analysis. Encited is SEO and AI search infrastructure with an MCP server, so tracking is one slice of the package.
  • Otterly.AI Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts on four base engines, with Gemini, Claude and AI Mode sold as add-ons.

Any of these will tell you whether you appear for a handful of questions. For a sole trader who wants a monthly thermometer and nothing more, $20 is a reasonable spend.

The question a $20 tracker cannot answer

Here is the part that changes the math. The 200K visitor events on Promptwatch Essential come from visitor analytics, a lightweight script or a GTM template on your site. It records sessions that arrive from AI engines and whether they convert.

That turns a tracker into a business tool. Say ChatGPT mentions you on "best family dentist near me" and a few people book from it this month. Now you know the channel deserves effort. If Perplexity cites you every week and nobody ever arrives, you know not to pour your content budget there yet.

None of the cheaper trackers above publishes analytics that tie AI-referred visits to conversions. You can approximate it in Google Analytics with referrer filters. That works until someone has to keep the filters current, and it never lines up with the prompt that produced the visit.

So the real comparison is not $20 versus $95. It is $20 plus the hours someone spends guessing whether the mentions matter, against $95 for the mention, the citation and the visit in one report.

A quick word on prompts

Cheap plans usually cap prompts low, and owners tend to fill them with keywords. Don't. "Accountant London" is a Google query. A ChatGPT user types "I run a small café in Hackney, do I need an accountant or can I do my own VAT returns?" Promptwatch shows search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs per prompt, which helps you spend a 50-prompt allowance on questions that people actually ask.

What we recommend by budget

No budget at all: run Promptwatch Explore on your 10 most important ChatGPT questions and check Gemini and Perplexity by hand once a month. Write the answers down in a sheet with the date.

Around $20 a month: Rankscale will give you a basic visibility trend. Treat it as a thermometer, not an analytics system.

Around $100 a month: this is where we usually start a small business, on Promptwatch Essential. Load 30 to 50 questions your customers ask, in their words rather than your keyword list. Install the visitor script on day one. After a month you will know which engine sends people, which pages get cited and whether the effort pays.

If you would rather hand it to us, send your top ten customer questions to hello@1001seomedia.com. We will tell you honestly whether the free tier is enough for now.
