How much do AI visibility tools cost? What we tell clients to budget

What AI visibility tools cost, why headline prices mislead, and how we help clients budget for tracking, crawler logs and content, with Promptwatch pricing.

Clients ask about cost early, usually before they ask what they will get. We understand why. The category is new, prices vary wildly and the pricing pages do not always make sense. Here is how we explain it.

Why the sticker price misleads

We look at four things before we compare prices.

What is counted. Some tools count prompts. Others count responses, where one response is one prompt answered by one engine. Others use credits. Fifty prompts across five engines is a very different load from fifty prompts on one.

Which engines are included. Entry plans can cover a few engines, with the rest sold as add-ons.

How often it runs. Daily tracking is not the same as weekly.

What else is in the box. A tracker and a platform with crawler logs, citation analytics and visitor analytics do different jobs. Comparing their prices directly is like comparing a thermometer and a doctor's visit.

The ranges we see

At the low end are free tiers and cheap trackers, useful for learning. In the middle are plans from roughly $100 to a few hundred a month, which suit small teams. Above that are mid-market and agency plans. Enterprise tools are sales-led.

We will not quote competitor prices from memory, because they change and we do not want to mislead you. Check each vendor's page. For the platform we use, the numbers are public.

Promptwatch pricing, as we use it

Promptwatch is the platform our client programs run on. Prices are in USD per month, monthly billing. Annual is twelve months for the price of ten.

For brands:

  • Explore: free, with 1 project, 10 prompts and ChatGPT only. Good for a first look.
  • Essential: $95, with 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, a site audit and 200K visitor events. There are no crawler logs on this plan.
  • Professional: $245, with 150 prompts, 18,000 responses, crawler logs, custom reports and a knowledge base. This is where we usually start paying clients.
  • Business: $579, with 350 prompts, 42,000 responses, state and city tracking, Ads Radar, Shopping Insights and the automated Content Agent.

For agencies (self-serve):

  • Kick-off: $199, Growth: $399, Scale: $799, each with unlimited projects and prompts and ten seats.

Enterprise is tailored. A 7-day free trial applies to monthly billing on the lower paid plans. Always check the live page.

How we help clients choose

We ask four questions:

  1. How many prompts and countries do you actually need to track? Often fewer than people expect.
  2. Do you need to know why you are or are not visible? If yes, crawler logs and citation analytics matter, which means Professional or above.
  3. Do you need to show traffic and conversions? Visitor analytics is included from Essential.
  4. Do you want content produced against gaps? That is Business, or an agency's own process.

Most small programs fit on Essential or Professional. Larger ones move to Business. We steer people away from buying more than the prompt set justifies.

Hidden costs to ask about

  • Extra engines or extra prompts sold separately.
  • Seats and projects.
  • Add-ons for credits or articles. Promptwatch sells extra Agent Credits and extra AEO articles, with 20 percent off yearly add-ons.
  • Your own time. A tool you do not read is a waste at any price.

What price will not buy

No price buys a guaranteed recommendation from an AI engine. Tools measure and diagnose. The work is still yours or your agency's. Budget for the work as well as the software.

A budgeting example, without invented numbers

Take a client with one brand, one country and about fifty prompts. That fits a plan like Essential on paper. If they also want to know why they are missing from answers, they need crawler logs, which means stepping up to Professional. If they want an automated content program, Business is where the Content Agent sits. We walk through that logic on a call and let the client decide which question they actually want answered. Most pick the middle step.
