AI Search Rank Tracking Tools: GEO and SEO Platforms

What 'rank' means inside an AI answer, how SEO suites like Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Mangools track it, and when a dedicated GEO platform is the better buy.

Clients who have tracked keyword rankings for ten years want the same thing for AI search: one number per query, updated daily, going up. AI answers don't work that way, and the tools split into two camps depending on how they handle that. SEO suites added an AI module next to the rank tracker. Dedicated GEO platforms were built around prompts from the start.

Before picking a camp, it helps to agree on what "rank" even means.

What a rank is inside an AI answer

There's no page two in ChatGPT. Instead, we report four different things, and we label them separately so nobody mixes them up on a call.

Position in a list. When someone asks for "the best payroll software for small teams," the answer often names several brands in order. Being named first is worth more than being named fifth. This is the closest thing to a classic rank.

Visibility share. Across all the prompts you track, and across repeated runs, how often does your brand appear at all? Answers vary between runs, which is why some tools run each prompt several times and average the result.

Citation. Whether your URL is one of the sources the answer links to. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and the reverse happens too.

Trend. How each of those moves between checks. A single day's result is a sample. The direction over weeks is the signal.

SEO suites that added AI tracking

If your team already lives in one of these, the AI module is the low-friction option. Prices below are what the vendors publish, as of our last check.

Semrush AI Toolkit. Tracks brand mentions and links in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, with keyword-to-prompt mapping and a combined SEO and GEO view. It's $99/mo per domain for 5 engines, 25 prompts and 1 user. Extra prompts are $60/mo per 50, extra users $99/mo each. Claude, Copilot and DeepSeek coverage is on the sales-gated Enterprise AIO tier.

Ahrefs Brand Radar. Brand and competitor mention share across AI Overviews and AI assistants, sitting on the Ahrefs link and content data. It needs an Ahrefs base plan (from $129/mo), then $199/mo per AI index, or $699/mo for all six (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews, AI Mode). Custom prompts are $50/mo per 2,500 checks.

SE Ranking AI Tracker. AI Overview and chat-answer tracking inside SE Ranking. The AI Search add-on is $89/mo for 200 checks (one check is one prompt on one engine) on top of the core suite at about $129/mo for Pro. Larger add-ons run $179 for 450 checks and $345 for 1,000.

Mangools AI Search Watcher. Covers eight engines (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Mistral, Llama) and runs each prompt multiple times to report average positions and visibility scores. It's included in Mangools Basic, Premium and Agency plans; that page doesn't publish the plan prices.

What they share: the AI data sits next to keyword data you already trust, and the price is easy to approve. What they don't attach to the prompt is what happens on your own site. None of these AI modules documents a link from a tracked prompt to the crawl of the cited page, or to the visitors that answer sent. Ahrefs has a separate Bot Analytics beta, and Semrush has a Log File Analyzer plus Enterprise bot reporting, but those are separate products from the AI tracking.

Dedicated GEO platforms

These treat the prompt as the unit of work, the way an SEO suite treats the keyword.

Promptwatch. The platform we run client programs on. For rank tracking specifically, three things matter to us. Prompt trends show how visibility and rankings move over time and what changed between checks. Each prompt carries a search volume and a difficulty score, so we can prioritize the way we would with keywords. And query fan-outs show the sub-queries an engine runs behind a prompt, which often explains a position better than the prompt itself. On top of that it adds the layers the SEO suites keep separate: Agent Analytics crawler logs with a crawl-to-citation path, and visitor analytics for AI-referred sessions and conversions. Monitoring reads the real interfaces across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, among others. Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential is $95/mo, Professional $245/mo with crawler logs.

AthenaHQ. Rolls citations, sentiment and query types into one GEO score and has an Action Center for tasks. Starter is $295/mo ($245 annual), single country.

Scrunch AI. Monitoring plus page serving for AI crawlers. Starter is $250/mo annual.

Profound. Now sold mainly as marketing agents. Public Starter is $99/mo annual and ChatGPT-only; most engines and agents are on Enterprise from about $40k a year.

Which camp we put clients in

SituationWhat we recommend
Small site, SEO team already in Semrush or Ahrefs, AI is a curiosityTurn on the suite's AI module and track 25 prompts
AI answers already affect pipeline, someone has to explain movementA dedicated GEO platform with prompt trends
Leadership asks whether AI traffic convertsPromptwatch, with visitor analytics installed
A page dropped out of answers and nobody knows whyPromptwatch Professional or higher, for crawler logs

The setup we usually propose is both: the SEO suite for keywords, Promptwatch for prompts. Our Promptwatch vs Semrush AI Toolkit vs Ahrefs Brand Radar post goes deeper on that three-way split.
