Best AI brand monitoring platforms
What makes the best AI brand monitoring platforms, from agency practice: which signals to track, how we set up monitoring, and why we run programs on Promptwatch.
"Brand monitoring" used to mean alerts for news, social posts and reviews. Now clients also want to know what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews say about them, and that is a different problem with a different set of tools. We run AI brand monitoring for clients, and here is how we separate good setups from noisy ones.
Two kinds of monitoring
Social and media listening watches the open web and social channels. Brand24, Meltwater and similar tools do this, and some have added AI features.
AI answer monitoring runs prompts against AI engines and records the answers. It tells you whether the brand is named, how it is described, who else appears and which sources the answer used.
Clients usually need both. This article is about the second, because that is where most teams have no coverage at all.
What we monitor
We build a prompt set of about 30 to 50 prompts per brand:
- Category prompts. "Best [category] for [use case]". These measure presence.
- Comparison prompts. "[Brand] vs [competitor]". These measure positioning.
- Brand prompts. "Is [brand] good?" and "[brand] reviews". These measure reputation.
- Problem prompts. The pain points that lead to your category.
For each answer we capture position, sentiment, competitors and cited sources. We also track by country and language, because answers differ.
Features that decide the platform
Sentiment that is readable. A number alone is useless. We want the wording behind it. Promptwatch scores sentiment per response, from 1 to 100, and writes a weekly summary, which makes reports easier.
Control over what counts as a mention. A Brand Book with analysis instructions and brand aliases stops noise from similar names. Without it, a brand called "Apex" is hopeless.
Citations. Knowing which pages and domains the engines rely on tells us where to act. Page and domain citation analytics, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, cover that.
Daily panels. Answers shift. Prompt panels that run daily per model, country and language give us trend lines rather than snapshots.
Evidence from the client's own site. Crawler logs from IP-verified AI bots and visitor analytics for AI-referred conversions. These are the difference between a monitoring dashboard and a program. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245 a month).
Alerts. Usage alerts at 85 percent of a quota, and weekly digests, keep programs from silently running out.
Why we run client work on Promptwatch
For the reasons above. It covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through real interfaces, and tracks Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok via API, which we state in client reports. It also gives us the Action Board for prioritised work, Agent Chat for quick analysis and the Content Agent (Business, $579 a month) for drafts with review. Agency plans start at $199 a month with unlimited projects.
How other options fit
AthenaHQ ($295 a month Starter) and Scrunch AI ($250 a month Core) are solid dedicated platforms with scores and audits. Semrush and Ahrefs offer AI modules inside their suites, handy if you already pay for them and want one login. Brand24, Meltwater and Muck Rack offer AI visibility next to listening and PR monitoring, which suits communications teams. We have not found any of them publishing the combination of crawler logs, citation depth and conversion tracking in one place.
What we tell clients
Monitoring does not change what engines say. It tells you what they say and why. The change comes from clearer content, credible third-party mentions, accurate listings and a site bots can read. Anyone promising control over AI answers is overselling.
Setting it up
- Agree the prompt set with the client's marketing and sales teams.
- Define the Brand Book: name, aliases, competitors and what to ignore.
- Run two weeks of baseline.
- Review sentiment wording, not just scores.
- Link findings to actions: content, listings, technical fixes.
- Report monthly, using the same prompts.
To see a first baseline for your own brand, Promptwatch has a free Explore tier covering 10 prompts on ChatGPT, which is enough to judge whether the data is useful.
