Best AI search monitoring tool for legal marketing: what we use for law firm programs
How we choose an AI search monitoring tool for legal marketing: local prompts by practice area, citation sources, crawler access and reporting law firms can read.
Law firms are a hard category for AI search work. The queries are local, the stakes for the person asking are high, and the engines are cautious. You will see answers that name a few firms, point to a directory, or tell the user to consult an attorney without naming anyone. A monitoring tool has to cope with all three.
Here is how we approach tool choice for legal marketing, and what we run client programs on. This is marketing practice, not legal or compliance advice.
Start with practice areas, not the firm name
The biggest mistake we see is tracking only branded prompts. "Is [firm] any good" tells you reputation. It does not tell you whether a stranger with a car accident will ever hear your name.
We build prompt sets per practice area. Personal injury, employment, immigration, estate planning, family law, business disputes. Each set mixes informational prompts ("what happens after a wrongful termination"), commercial prompts ("best employment lawyer in [city]") and comparison prompts. Then we tag them, so reporting can show practice area by city.
The tool needs topics, tags and prompt types, and it needs to handle location without hacks.
Location is the deciding feature
Legal demand is local. Country-level tracking will mislead you, because the answer for "family lawyer" in one city can differ from the next.
We use Promptwatch for client programs partly because of how it handles location. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking starts on the Business plan and is on every agency plan. Local GEO/SEO targeting goes further and pins a monitor to exact coordinates, from 20 metres to 5 kilometres, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. Other models fall back to country, state or city. Local targeting sits on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise.
For a firm with a single office, country-level may be enough to start. For a multi-office practice, this is the feature that justifies the price.
What we look at after the baseline
Citations. Citation analytics show which pages and domains engines cite. In legal markets we usually find directories, review platforms, local news, bar association pages and Reddit threads. If a competitor is named because of a directory listing you do not have, that is a concrete task. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports separate community and video sources from web pages.
Crawler access. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified logs of real AI crawlers: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others. Law firm sites are often built on old themes with aggressive security plugins. We have found that checking access before rewriting content saves weeks of wasted effort. Crawler logs start on Professional, so an Essential plan will not show them.
AI-referred traffic. Visitor analytics follows referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others, and ties them to conversion events. For firms, define a conversion as a form submission or click to call, then report on that. Volumes are usually small, so we report counts honestly and do not promise growth.
Reporting that a managing partner reads
Firms want a one-page answer: are we named, by whom, and what changed. Promptwatch produces PDF reports from any dashboard, scheduled PDF reports, and custom reports from Professional and on all agency plans. Agent Chat can pull a weekly briefing from the data. Keep the report short. Visibility Score trend, Share of Voice against three named competitors, and the top five citation gaps.
Content, with care
Once gaps are clear, content is the next step. Legal content needs attorney review, and we never publish unreviewed text on a client's behalf. The Content Agent on Business and Enterprise plans can plan and draft against gaps with a review inbox, and on-demand Content Creation is there for single pieces. Whatever tool drafts the text, a qualified person at the firm must approve it, and the firm should check its jurisdiction's advertising rules with its own counsel.
What monitoring cannot do
It cannot make an engine recommend a firm. Answers vary between runs and engines often decline to name lawyers at all. A tracker shows frequency, sources and trend. It does not show intent, and it cannot say whether a mention led to a retained client unless your intake tracking is set up.
Other tools we compare
AthenaHQ has a strong optimization workflow, but its entry plan is single-country. Scrunch AI covers four engines on its Core plan. Semrush and Ahrefs add AI visibility inside suites some teams already pay for. Each is fine for a narrower job. For a firm that wants local tracking, crawler evidence and conversion data in one workspace, the platform we run is the one that covers all of it.
Where to begin
Try the free Explore plan to see a ChatGPT baseline on 10 prompts. If you need crawler logs, start at Professional at $245 a month. If you need city tracking or serve several firms, look at Business at $579 or an agency plan from $199.
