The best AI visibility tools for law firms, according to our client programs

How we choose AI visibility tools for law firms: city-level prompts, practice-area structure, citation sources and attribution, and why we run programs on Promptwatch.

When a law firm asks us about AI visibility, the starting point is a very practical one: someone is typing "best employment lawyer in Denver for a wrongful termination" into ChatGPT, and the answer names three firms. Is yours one of them? And if not, what decides it?

One caveat before we go on. This is marketing measurement, not legal or compliance advice. Lawyer advertising rules vary by jurisdiction and bar, so run your marketing plans past whoever handles compliance. And no tool can promise an AI engine will recommend your firm.

Law is local, specific and high-stakes, and the prompts show it. A few patterns we see across firms:

  • Practice plus place: "best family lawyer in Leeds", "commercial lease solicitor near Birmingham".
  • Situation-led: "what to do after a car accident in Texas", "can my employer fire me for taking medical leave".
  • Comparison and trust: "is a boutique firm better than a large firm for a startup", "firm A versus firm B".
  • Cost and process: "how much does a will cost", "do divorce lawyers offer fixed fees".

For each, we want to see whether the firm is named, in what position, with what sentiment, and which sources the engine cited. Two things stand out. First, a firm can be strong on situation-led prompts and invisible on "best lawyer in city" prompts, which are the ones that turn into calls. Second, engines can cite directories, review platforms and news rather than the firm's own site, so we always check.

What we need from the tool

City and state tracking. In Promptwatch, country-level tracking is on every paid plan, and state and city tracking starts on the Business plan. Business also adds local GEO/SEO targeting that pins a monitor to coordinates, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. For a firm with one office in one city, you may get by with plain prompts that name the city. For a multi-office practice, Business is the plan we scope.

Prompt structure. Topics for practice areas, tags for offices, prompt types for organic, brand and competitor comparison, and personas for different clients, all of which Promptwatch supports. Without that structure, results blur into one number.

Citation analytics. We look at which pages and domains the engine cited when a competitor won, and at offsite mentions. Then we decide what is legitimate for the firm to do: correct a directory profile, offer commentary to a legal publication, update a practice page.

Crawler logs. Practice pages and attorney bios need to be reachable by AI crawlers. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified bot activity, errors and a citation rate per page. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245 a month).

Attribution. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred sessions and conversions, which is how a managing partner sees whether any of this produced enquiries.

Vendor security. Promptwatch is ISO/IEC 27001 certified and GDPR compliant, which helps a firm's vendor questionnaire. That says nothing about a firm's own obligations.

Other tools we tell law firms about

BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility scores each location from 0 to 100 on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, included on its plans from $41 a month for one location. It suits a single-office firm already using BrightLocal, with a cap of 20 prompts per location. Synup's AEO module runs 16 local prompts per location monthly, from $49 a month. AthenaHQ ($295 a month on Starter) and Scrunch AI ($250 a month Core) cover the platform side at country level or without published city tracking. Profound is an enterprise program.

They are reasonable tools. We run programs on Promptwatch because the crawler logs and conversion tracking sit next to the citation data.

A starting plan for a firm

  1. Pick the three practice areas that drive revenue.
  2. Write ten prompts per practice area, naming each office city.
  3. Add five comparison prompts per area that name competing firms.
  4. Track for a month before touching content.
  5. Read the cited domains. List the ten that matter.
  6. Fix the basics: consistent profiles, accurate practice pages, bylined attorney bios.

Resist the temptation to publish thin pages for every city. Engines read them the same way people do.

Where to begin

Promptwatch has a free Explore tier covering 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. That is enough for a first look at your top practice area. When you need city tracking, crawler logs and conversions, the Business plan is where those come together.
