Best free AI visibility tracker: how we use free tiers with clients

How to use a free AI visibility tracker well: choosing ten prompts, reading answers, and knowing when free stops being enough for a real program.

We often start new clients on a free tracker. Not out of generosity, but because the first two weeks are about learning whether the question is worth paying to answer. A free tracker gives you a baseline and a reality check for the cost of nothing. The trick is to use it with discipline, because ten prompts is not many.

Pick ten prompts that matter

The biggest mistake with a free tier is spending the allowance on vanity queries. We choose ten prompts across three groups: four category questions a stranger would ask, three comparison questions naming a rival, and three questions about the brand itself. Category prompts come from sales call notes and support tickets, not keyword tools alone.

Promptwatch's free Explore plan gives one project, one seat, ten prompts and 310 responses, tracking ChatGPT only. That is enough for this exercise. Prompt Explorer can suggest candidates from your site or Search Console, and the free GEO Inspector Chrome extension shows ChatGPT fan-outs and which sources were fetched versus cited, which tells you what the engine was really searching for.

Read the answers, not only the score

A free tracker reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, sentiment and position in the answer. Useful, but we read at least ten full responses by hand. You learn which competitors keep appearing, which of your pages the engine cites (if any), and whether your brand is described accurately. Outdated pricing descriptions and wrong product categories only show up this way, and no score will flag them.

What free usually leaves out

Free plans in this category share a few gaps:

  • Engines. Explore tracks ChatGPT only. Every paid plan adds all active models.
  • Crawler data. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245 a month). So a free account cannot tell you whether GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages.
  • Traffic. Visitor analytics needs a script on your site and quotas that free plans do not stretch to.
  • Volume. Ten prompts will not cover several personas or markets.

None of that makes the free tier bad. It makes it a probe.

Free alternatives we mention to clients

Some tools offer one-off scans, such as Promptwatch's no-login AI Visibility Report, which gives a quick read before anyone creates an account. Other vendors offer credits or short trials. Trials of a week are fine for a demo but too short for a trend, so we favor a permanent free plan for baselining. If your team already pays for Ahrefs, Custom Prompts on a paid Ahrefs plan is a reasonable no-extra-cost option, with daily quotas that depend on the plan.

When to move off free

Three signals tell us it is time:

  1. The baseline shows a gap and you need to know why. That needs citation analytics and crawler logs.
  2. You need more than one engine, country or persona.
  3. Someone wants to know what AI visits are worth, which needs visitor analytics.

At that point we usually move clients to Essential at $95 a month for 50 prompts, and to Professional at $245 once crawler logs and custom reports matter. Agencies running several clients are better off on the agency plans from $199 a month with unlimited projects and prompts. A 7-day free trial exists on monthly billing for the lower tiers, so you can test before committing.

A realistic expectation

Free tracking tells you where you stand today. It does not move you. And no tool, free or paid, can promise that ChatGPT will recommend a brand. The value is in running the same prompts again in two weeks and seeing whether anything changed after you fixed something.

Start with a free Promptwatch Explore account, load your ten prompts, and write down what you expect to see. The gap between expectation and answer is usually the first useful finding.
