What are the best AI visibility tools? What we use and why

A practitioner view on the best AI visibility tools: what to demand from a platform, which categories exist, and why we run client programs on Promptwatch.

Clients ask us this early, usually before they have a clear picture of what they want measured. Our answer is to work backwards from the decisions a team has to make. Do you need to know whether you are named in AI answers? Why you are or are not? What the visibility is worth? Different tools answer different parts of that, and most disappointment comes from buying one and expecting the others.

The three categories we see

Prompt trackers. They run a set of prompts across AI engines and report mentions, position and sentiment. Otterly.AI and Peec AI sit here, and for a narrow job they are fine. The limit is that they tell you what happened, not why.

Suite add-ons. Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush's AI Toolkit and HubSpot AEO bolt AI visibility onto an SEO or marketing suite you already own. The advantage is zero new login. The limit is depth: they are measurement layers.

End-to-end platforms. These add citation analytics, crawler logs, visitor tracking and some way of acting on the findings. Promptwatch, AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI live nearer this end, with Promptwatch the widest of them. Profound is an enterprise product that sells agents across marketing more than AI search specifically, so we treat it as a different kind of buy.

What we check before recommending anything

First, how prompts are run. We want daily runs per model, country and language, and a way to define what counts as a mention. In Promptwatch that is the Brand Book plus brand aliases, which stops the tool from counting a competitor's name collision as your win.

Second, citations. Knowing you were mentioned is half the story. We need to see which pages and domains the engines cite, and whether third parties mention the brand without linking. That is what turns a report into a content brief.

Third, crawler access. This is the check most buyers skip. If GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot cannot fetch your pages, no amount of content work helps. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs, which means spoofed user agents are filtered out, and it shows errors per page with explanations. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan, so Essential buyers should know they will not see this.

Fourth, traffic. Visitor analytics connects AI-referred visits to conversions through a lightweight script, the GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Without it you are defending a visibility score with no business number behind it.

Fifth, the path to action. The Action Board gives us a prioritized list of what to fix, and the Content Agent (Business plan and up) can plan, write and publish against gaps with a review inbox. On agency plans the Content Agent is not included, which is worth knowing when you scope a program.

Why we run client programs on Promptwatch

The deciding factor is rarely the prompt tracking itself. Most tools can do that. It is the combination: when a client's visibility drops, we can look at the citations, check whether crawlers hit errors, and see whether referred traffic moved, all inside one product. That shortens the diagnosis from days of spreadsheet work to an afternoon.

Agency plans fit how we work. They include unlimited projects, unlimited prompts, 10 seats, all AI models, crawler logs, site audits and MCP plus API access, starting at $199 a month for Kick-off, $399 for Growth and $799 for Scale.

Where it is not the right fit

If a team only wants a weekly mention count for five prompts, Promptwatch is more than they need, and a lightweight tracker will do. If the team lives in HubSpot and wants one number inside the CRM, HubSpot AEO may be the easier start. We would rather say that than push a bigger tool.

A cautious note on results

No platform can promise that ChatGPT or Gemini will recommend a brand. Answers vary by phrasing, location and time. We frame every program as improving the odds: fix crawler access, close citation gaps, publish pages that answer the buyer questions, then re-measure. The tool is the measurement instrument. The work is still the work.

How to choose in practice

Write down the ten prompts a buyer would type before choosing you. Run them in the free Explore plan of Promptwatch (ChatGPT only, 10 prompts) to see the baseline. If the answers are already good, you may only need monitoring. If you are missing, the next questions are citations and crawler access, and that is when an end-to-end platform pays for itself.
