The best LLM citation tracking tool: what we look for and what we run for clients

How we choose the best LLM citation tracking tool for client programs: model coverage, page-level data, crawler evidence, and why we run on Promptwatch.

When a client asks for the best LLM citation tracking tool, we ask a question back: what are you going to do with the numbers? A citation count is a score. A citation workflow is a loop: find the pages the models cite, work out why yours are missing, fix it, and check again. The tool that makes that loop short is the best one, whatever its homepage says.

Citation counts alone will mislead you

We have seen teams celebrate a rise in citations that turned out to be branded prompts citing the company's own homepage. Of course the model cites you when asked about you. The useful signal sits in unbranded and competitor comparison prompts, where the model chooses between sources. So the first requirement for any tool is that it lets you separate prompt types. In Promptwatch, prompts carry types (organic, brand, competitor comparison), topics, tags and personas, and we filter reports on them before reading anything.

Models cite differently

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces do not pull from the same places. We keep model-level views in every report rather than one blended number, because a client can be strong on one engine and nearly invisible on another. Promptwatch monitors the live-search platforms through the real interface (ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa, Meta AI) and adds API-based models such as Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok. We are careful to tell clients which is which, because an API sample is not a user's chat window.

The reports we actually use

Domain view. Which sites do the models trust for this topic? If review sites and forums dominate, the plan is about those places, not about the client's blog.

Page view. Citation analytics list page-level and domain-level citations with URL positions. The Page Tracker lets us follow a particular URL, including a competitor's, which is our favorite way to learn what a cited page does differently.

Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports. Social sources show up more than most clients expect, and these views separate them from ordinary web pages.

Citation Trends. Each citation is classified by content type and source type, with first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page. This is the report that tells us when to refresh a page and which pages hold their citations.

Crawler logs explain what citations cannot

If a page is never cited, we check whether it was ever fetched. Agent Analytics provides real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs, so fake user agents are filtered out, with GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others identified by their real names. The crawl-to-citation path and a citation rate per page tell us whether a page is fetched but not used, or never fetched at all. Those two problems have different fixes. One is editorial, the other is technical, and a surprising share of cases fall into the technical bucket.

A practical note: crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245/mo). Essential ($95/mo) has the citation reports but no logs. For clients who need the diagnostic loop, we start them on Professional.

From findings to action

The Action Board turns the data into a prioritized list, with a Discovery agent that investigates on a weekly schedule and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run. We assign them, comment, and review in the weekly meeting. When the fix is content, the Content Agent (Business and up) plans, writes and publishes against the gaps, with a review inbox so nothing goes live without sign-off. On lower plans we use content gap analysis and on-demand content creation instead.

Other tools we have looked at

AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound all report citations in some form, and Ahrefs and Semrush have AI add-ons. We would use them in specific cases: an action-queue team, a project focused on AI-specific page serving, a custom enterprise agent contract, or a team that wants everything in one SEO suite. For our own client programs we keep returning to Promptwatch because the crawl, citation and visit data live together.

What we tell clients about limits

No tool makes a model cite you. Answers shift between runs and between users, and a one-day dip is rarely a trend. We report on weeks, state what we measured, and avoid promising outcomes.

A quick way to test a tool

Take 30 prompts from real sales conversations, run them for two weeks, and ask the tool three questions: which pages are cited, which of ours are not, and why. A tool that can answer the third question is worth paying for. You can try the free Explore plan or a 7-day trial of Promptwatch and run exactly that test.
