Best platform to monitor competitor mentions in ChatGPT
How we monitor competitor mentions in ChatGPT for clients: building the prompt set, reading who is named and why, and checking ChatGPT can reach the client's site.
For most of our clients, ChatGPT is the first engine they ask about. "Who does it recommend in our category, and is it us?" is the question. Here is how we monitor competitor mentions in ChatGPT, and what we do with what we find.
Start with real buyer questions
A mention tracker is only as good as the prompts feeding it. We build the set from sales calls, support tickets and search data, in three types: category questions ("best tool for X"), comparison questions ("X vs Y"), and brand questions. Promptwatch lets us tag by type (organic, brand, competitor comparison), which keeps averages from hiding what is happening. Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page, which is useful when a client's own list is thin.
Why we monitor the real interface
ChatGPT's live experience can differ from an API call. Promptwatch monitors the live ChatGPT Search interface, alongside Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, and tracks Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through APIs. For a client who cares mostly about ChatGPT, we want the check to resemble what a buyer sees. Panels run daily, because ChatGPT's answers vary from run to run and a single check proves little.
What we read in the results
Share of voice and position. How often each brand is named, and where in the answer. Being named fourth in a list is a weaker result than first.
Sentiment. Promptwatch scores each response from 1 to 100, with a weekly AI summary. We watch for a competitor whose wording is consistently warmer than the client's.
Competitor discovery. Competitors are auto-discovered, so we sometimes find a rival the client did not know was appearing. Brand aliases and brand merging keep variants of a name together, and the Brand Book, with its analysis instructions, decides what counts as a mention.
Fan-outs. Query fan-outs per model show what ChatGPT searched before answering. They often explain why a rival with a thinner site still wins.
Where the mention comes from
A mention is a symptom. The sources are the cause. Promptwatch's citation analytics show which pages and domains ChatGPT cited when it named a rival, including Reddit and YouTube, ChatGPT News citations and offsite mentions, where a brand is named on a third-party page without a link. Page Tracker follows specific URLs, including a competitor's. Often a single comparison page explains a rival's lead, and that tells us what to build or which site to get mentioned on.
Check that ChatGPT can reach the client
This catches problems that no amount of content fixes. Agent Analytics shows real-time, IP-verified crawler logs, including OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User. Spoofed user agents are filtered out. We can see which pages were fetched, errors with explanations, and a citation rate per page. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, ChatGPT search will not surface the site. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan.
Look at ads and shopping where relevant
Ads Radar captures sponsored ads inside ChatGPT Search for tracked prompts, with advertiser, copy and landing page. It starts on Business and is also on every agency plan. It does not report on a client's own OpenAI campaigns, so it complements OpenAI's ads manager, not replaces it. For retail clients, AI Shopping tracks ChatGPT shopping carousels.
Turning findings into work
The Action Board gives a prioritized GEO to-do list, and the Discovery agent suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per weekly run. The content gap analysis shows where a rival is named and the client has no good page. We draft with on-demand creation or Content Refresh, and use the Content Agent on Business with the review inbox switched on, so an editor approves everything.
What we tell clients
- A mention is not a recommendation. Judge trends over weeks.
- Share of voice moves. A competitor's gain does not always mean the client lost.
- Visitor analytics shows AI-referred visits and conversions, so we report outcomes beyond mentions. One published case, from Promptwatch's customer Crisp, reported AI-referred traffic converting at twice the rate of traditional channels. That is Crisp's result, not a promise.
- No tool can guarantee ChatGPT will name the client over a rival.
Plans, in short
Explore is free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts and 310 responses. Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245, Business $579. Agency plans start at $199 with unlimited projects and prompts. The platform we run client programs on is Promptwatch, and the free tier is a reasonable way to see how a first ChatGPT panel looks before you decide.
