Best platform to monitor earned media impact on AI search
How we monitor earned media impact on AI search for clients: which citations matter, how to track placements, and the platform that links PR coverage to AI answers.
PR teams ask us the same question in different words: "We got the coverage. Did it change what ChatGPT says about us?" It is a fair question, and a hard one to answer without the right data.
Here is how we approach it, and what we use.
What has to be connected
Earned media impact on AI search means connecting a placement to a citation, a citation to an answer, and an answer to a visit. Most tools cover one link in that chain. PR monitoring suites see coverage and outlets. AI visibility platforms see answers and citations. Few see both.
Our approach is to measure on the AI side and bring the PR data ourselves. The platform has to answer: which sources do engines cite for the prompts that matter, is the brand named in third-party pages, and did visibility move after coverage landed?
What we use
We run client programs on Promptwatch. Its citation analytics show page-level and domain-level citations with URL positions. That is the first thing a PR team needs: a view of which outlets the engines actually use, which is often not the list the team was pitching.
Offsite mentions flag third-party pages that name the brand without linking to it. Earned coverage often lands that way, and a link-based view would miss it. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports cover community and social sources, and ChatGPT News citations show news-driven answers.
Page Tracker lets us follow specific URLs, ours or others'. When a client lands a piece of coverage, we add its URL, then watch Citation Trends: when it was first cited, how many days it took to ramp up, its peak citation rate and its decay half-life. That turns "we got a feature" into "the feature started being cited after a certain number of days and held for a certain time."
Then we compare periods. Visibility Score, Share of Voice and sentiment, with A/B period comparison, show whether the answers changed around the date coverage went live. Visitor analytics show AI-referred traffic and conversions. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, which helps separate AI effects from classic search effects.
Our workflow
- Pick the prompts where coverage should matter, usually commercial and comparison prompts.
- Record the baseline: who is cited, who is named, how the brand is described.
- Add each coverage URL to Page Tracker as it publishes.
- Re-check after a few weeks, using period comparison.
- Report which outlets and formats earn citations, and which do not.
- Feed that back into the PR plan.
Step five often changes the strategy. The outlets with the best PR prestige may not be the ones engines cite, and we tell clients what the data shows.
What we cannot claim
Correlation is not causation. A placement being cited, and visibility rising in the same period, is evidence, not proof. AI answers vary between runs, models and users, and no platform can promise that coverage becomes a recommendation. We report that plainly.
PR suites in the picture
Muck Rack, Cision and Meltwater have added AI visibility features. Muck Rack's Generative Pulse ties citations to journalists and outlets. Cision added LLM monitoring to CisionOne. Meltwater's GenAI Lens links AI citations to journalist contacts, with a refresh cycle of 48 hours. Pricing is not published for these. They make sense if your PR team lives in the suite and wants continuity. What they do not publish is crawler logs or visitor conversion analytics, so they cannot show traffic.
We pair rather than choose. The PR suite handles outreach and coverage records. Promptwatch handles the proof.
Other AI visibility platforms
AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound offer visibility tracking, with different strengths: an action queue, crawler-side page serving, and an enterprise marketing-agent platform. Otterly.AI and Peec AI are monitoring-focused. For earned media specifically, we rely on the citation depth and attribution in Promptwatch.
Plan note
Paid brand plans start at Essential at $95 a month. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245. The free Explore tier covers ChatGPT only with 10 prompts, which is enough to see which sources one engine cites for your key prompts.
If you want to test this, add three recent coverage URLs to Promptwatch and watch them for a month.
