Bing Webmaster AI Search Optimization, Copilot Citations, and Structured Data: Official
Official Bing Webmaster AI Performance guidance: Copilot citations, grounding queries, IndexNow, Bing Places, and what the February 2026 preview does not cover.
Official Bing Webmaster AI search optimization in 2026 is the February AI Performance preview. It shows how often your URLs are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. Structured data still belongs on pages where it matches the visible content. This console does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
We treat Bing's post as the rulebook for Microsoft surfaces. We use Promptwatch when the brief also named the assistants Bing cannot see. Ahrefs and Semrush stay for classic ranks. They do not replace Webmaster Tools.
What AI Performance actually reports
Total citations. How often your content was displayed as a source in those AI answers during the date range. Not placement inside a specific answer.
Average cited pages. Unique URLs from your site cited per day, aggregated. Bing says this is not ranking, authority, or role inside one answer.
Grounding queries. Sample phrases the system used when retrieving the cited content. Sample, not a full prompt portfolio. We will not treat a grounding phrase as a complete ChatGPT prompt.
Page-level citation activity. Citation counts by URL. Frequency, not importance.
Trends over time. Direction on Microsoft AI surfaces.
Bing respects robots.txt and other supported controls. If you blocked the crawler, do not expect citations.
IndexNow, Places, and structured data
Bing's same note points at IndexNow so participating engines hear about adds, updates, and removals faster. We wire IndexNow on sites we already deploy often. We do not sell it as a ranking factor or a Copilot coupon.
Local businesses should also keep Bing Places current (address, hours, contact). That is the Microsoft-side listing. GBP remains the Google listing. The local playbook is still the work. Places does not track ChatGPT.
Bing's content advice in that post is ordinary: depth, headings, tables, FAQ sections, evidence, fresh facts, aligned text and media. Structured data should describe the same entities the user sees. We implement it for rich results and clarity. We do not invent a Copilot-only schema type.
Google's rules stay Google. Overviews still follow AI features and the optimization guide. Schema is not required for Overviews. GSC June 2026 reports are impressions, not clicks. Do not paste Bing citation counts into a GSC export.
How we run official Bing on an account
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Open AI Performance. Export citations and top cited URLs.
- Read grounding phrases as samples. Add a real buyer prompt to Promptwatch only when a human would ask it that way.
- Confirm IndexNow is posting on publish. Confirm Bing Places if local queries matter.
- Check robots.txt for Bingbot. A Copilot miss that starts with "never crawled" is a crawl ticket.
- Keep Ahrefs or Semrush for Microsoft/Google organic ranks. Brand Radar and the Semrush AI Toolkit ($99/mo per domain) stay modeled. They are not Bing AI Performance.
Promptwatch paid plans cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google Overviews, daily. Essential $95/mo. Kick-off $199/mo. Professional $245/mo. Business $579/mo. Explore is ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. That is the gap Bing left on purpose.
What we will not do
We will not report Bing citations as Google Overview impressions. We will not claim AI Performance covers ChatGPT. We will not invent partner-integration traffic numbers Bing did not publish. We will not sell instant alerts on Copilot.
FAQ
Is AI Performance still a preview?
The February 2026 post shipped it as a public preview. We use what it shows and we label it as such.
Does IndexNow replace a sitemap?
No. It notifies participating engines of changes. Sitemaps and crawl hygiene stay.
Can we skip Promptwatch if Copilot is the only AI surface we care about?
Yes. Most briefs that said "AI search" also asked about ChatGPT. If Copilot is truly the only surface, Bing plus IndexNow plus Places is the official stack.
What to do this week
- Open Bing AI Performance. Export total citations and page-level counts.
- Enable IndexNow if it is not already posting.
- Update Bing Places if you are local.
- If ChatGPT or Perplexity are in the SOW, load those prompts into Promptwatch.
- Email hello@1001seomedia.com if you want the official Bing note written for a stakeholder who keeps mixing Copilot with Overviews. We follow Webmaster Tools for Microsoft. We use Promptwatch for everyone else.
