GEO Tool for AI SEO and Generative Engine Optimization vs Geographic SEO Tool GeoRanker

GEO means generative engine optimization on our accounts. GeoRanker is a geographic rank tracker. Same letters, different job. We do not invent GeoRanker prices.

GEO on an AI SEO brief means generative engine optimization: show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, or AI Overviews, then fix the source. GeoRanker is a geographic SEO tool: ranks by city, zip, or map-style location. The homonym wastes a lot of kickoff time. We will not invent GeoRanker plan names or prices. They are not in our data.

The generative GEO tool we run is Promptwatch. Geographic rank tracking stays in whatever you already trust (Ahrefs, Semrush, a local suite, or GeoRanker if it is already paid). BrightLocal is the local-suite category, not this homonym. See that note.

Two definitions, one acronym

Generative GEO. Prompt list. Daily UI answers. Mention versus citation. Crawler logs. City as prompt wording ("best plumber in Austin"), not as a pack rank.

Geographic SEO (GeoRanker and peers). Where you rank in Google or maps for a keyword in a location pin. Useful. Older. Not a citation log.

If a prospect says "we need a GEO tool" and then asks about pack rankings, they mean geographic. If they say "we need a GEO tool" and then ask whether ChatGPT recommends them, they mean generative. Ask which one before anyone buys software.

What we use for generative GEO

Paid Promptwatch: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Overviews, daily. Country, state, and city fields on the prompt when place changes the answer. Essential $95/mo. Kick-off $199/mo. Professional $245/mo. Business $579/mo. Explore free, ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. Citations, crawler logs, visitor analytics, DataForSEO.

Otterly $29, Peec $95 (three models), Profound Starter $99 annual (ChatGPT only), Scrunch $250 annual (weekly Excel) are generative-category vendors, not geographic rank trackers. Otterly Gemini and Claude are add-ons ($9 to $149); lag can be up to seven days. Peec extra models are $35 to $165.

Ahrefs and Semrush can do local rank features depending on the SKU. Brand Radar is modeled AI visibility. Semrush AI Toolkit is $99/mo per domain and modeled. Keep the suites. They do not turn GeoRanker into ChatGPT monitoring, and they do not turn Promptwatch into a pack tracker.

How we run both when the brief mixed them

  1. Write the two jobs on the SOW as separate lines: "Google ranks by city" and "assistant citations on city prompts."
  2. Geographic: keep GeoRanker if it is paid, or use Ahrefs/Semrush/local suite. We will not quote a GeoRanker number.
  3. Generative: 25 prompts from real local language. Load Promptwatch with city targeting. Local playbook for GBP.
  4. Do not chart pack position against a ChatGPT mention. Different units.
  5. After a generative miss, edit the location or service page (real facts, first sentence). How to get cited by ChatGPT. After a pack miss, categories, reviews, proximity, and on-page local signals.

GSC generative impressions stay Google-official. Bing AI Performance stays Copilot-official. Neither is GeoRanker. Neither is ChatGPT.

FAQ

Is GeoRanker a generative engine optimization tool?

No. It is a geographic rank tracker. If their marketing now includes AI language, we still need a prompt-level citation log. We will not describe features we have not recorded.

Can Promptwatch replace GeoRanker?

No. Promptwatch does not replace pack rankings. GeoRanker does not replace assistant citations.

Why include city fields in Promptwatch then?

Because the question is geographic. The measurement is still a generated answer, not a blue-link position.

What to do this week

  1. Ask the stakeholder which GEO they meant. Write it down.
  2. If geographic: keep the rank tracker you have. Do not buy Promptwatch for pack ranks.
  3. If generative: load 25 city prompts into Promptwatch Essential.
  4. If both: two scoreboards, one weekly, labeled.
  5. Email hello@1001seomedia.com if the kickoff already mixed the acronyms. We will split the jobs. We will not invent a GeoRanker price to close a comparison table.
