Google Search Console AI Overviews Traffic Measurement and Clicks: SEO Official
Official June 2026 GSC generative reports list impressions, pages, countries, devices, dates. Clicks are not in that list. We will not report impressions as clicks.
Google Search Console AI Overviews traffic measurement, in the official June 2026 announcement, is a dedicated view of impressions in generative AI features on Search (AI Overviews, AI Mode) and Discover. Google lists impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search), and dates (hourly through monthly). Clicks, CTR, and queries are not in that list. If a client asked for "clicks" because that is how SEO has always worked, the official report does not give that column yet. We say so in the first meeting.
The AI features page still says Overview traffic also sits inside the overall Performance report (Web), and that clicks from pages with Overviews have been higher quality (more time on site). That quality claim is not a GSC click table. The optimization guide is still the "what to do on the page" document, including generative-feature inclusion in Search Console.
How we read the official report on an account
Use it as "how often did our URLs appear in Google's generative features." Slice by page and country. Do not treat an impression as a session. Do not treat it as ChatGPT.
Preview and crawl controls remain as documented: Googlebot via robots.txt, snippet controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex), Google-Extended for other Google systems. Google-Extended is not a surgical Overview off switch.
A longer Search Central walkthrough is here.
Clicks we can actually measure
GA4 sessions with a usable referrer. Many Overview clicks look like Google organic. We label that honestly in the monthly deck.
Promptwatch visitor analytics (script or GTM) tag AI-referred hits when they arrive. Paid prompt tracking stores whether a named question cited you in Overviews, next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Essential is $95/mo. Explore is ChatGPT only, 10 prompts. Kick-off is $199/mo with unlimited projects and 10 seats.
That is not a GSC click column. Do not paste it into the GSC export and call it official.
Ahrefs and Semrush stay for the rest of SEO measurement. Brand Radar is $199/mo plus an Ahrefs plan. Semrush AI Toolkit is $99/mo per domain on modeled prompts. We keep both. They do not replace GSC.
Professional is $245/mo. Business is $579/mo. Agent Analytics is the crawl view, not a click view.
What we will not do
We will not report GSC generative impressions as clicks. We will not invent a CTR from Google's quality-of-visit note. We will not drop GSC because we added Promptwatch.
FAQ
Does GSC show AI Overview clicks in 2026?
Not in the metrics Google listed at launch. Impressions, yes.
Can we skip Promptwatch if we have GSC?
Only if you do not care about the prompt, the competing URLs, or non-Google engines.
Should we wait for Google to add clicks before we measure anything?
No. Measure impressions now. Measure sessions in GA4. Measure prompts in Promptwatch. Keep the labels straight.
What to do this week
- Open the generative AI performance report.
- Export top pages by impression. Write "impression" on the tab name.
- Keep GA4 for sessions. Do not merge the two files.
- Load those URLs' buyer prompts into Promptwatch if you need the citation row.
- Email hello@1001seomedia.com if you want the official measurement note written for a stakeholder who keeps asking for clicks.
