How to check if ChatGPT recommends my business locally
How we check whether ChatGPT recommends a local business: prompt design, testing by place, and the daily tracking setup we run on client programs.
Local business owners often test this once, see their competitor in the answer, and call us. Our first move is to slow them down. One question in one chat window is a sample of one. ChatGPT's answers vary between runs, and local answers depend on where the question seems to come from. Here is how we check properly.
Build the prompts the way customers speak
We write prompts in patterns.
- Category and place: "best electrician in [city]", "family dentist near [neighborhood]".
- Specific need: "restaurant in [city] with a private dining room".
- Comparison: "[client] vs [competitor] in [city]".
- Brand check: "is [client] in [city] any good".
- Constraints: "open now", "weekend appointments", "under [price]".
The best source is the client's own reviews, call notes and support emails, because customers phrase things differently from marketing teams. In Promptwatch, personas help here: persona stacking runs the same prompt as different buyer types, and Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console data or People Also Ask.
Run a manual test first
We ask each question, record whether the business appears, at what position and how it is described, and repeat on another day, another device and, if possible, another location. If the client appears in some runs and not others, visibility is partial, and that is a real finding. We also read the details the answer states, such as hours, address and services. Errors there usually trace back to inconsistent information across the website and listings.
Look at the sources behind the answer
A local answer is built from pages the engine finds: the business website, listing sites, review platforms, local press and directories. We check that the client's information is consistent and complete in those places. The Google Business Profile and main listings stay the foundation for local presence, so we confirm they are accurate before measuring anything.
Track it daily
Manual checks do not scale. For ongoing work, we use Promptwatch, the platform we run client programs on.
- Daily tracking through real interfaces. ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode are monitored as a customer sees them.
- Location settings. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking starts on Business ($579/mo) and is on every agency plan.
- Local GEO and SEO targeting. Added in October 2026, it pins a monitor to exact coordinates with a radius from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. It is on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. Other models fall back to country, state or city.
- Citation analytics. We see which pages and domains are cited for local prompts, and offsite mentions where the business is named without a link.
- Crawler logs. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified hits from bots such as OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, so we can tell whether the client's site is readable. Crawler logs start on Professional.
For locations that need a geography-first view, a grid tool such as Local Falcon, which scans from 9 to 441 points around a location, can be a useful add-on. BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility module scores each location against local competitors on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. We use these next to a platform, not instead of one.
Reading the results
We focus on three signals.
- How often the business is named across the prompt set, by location.
- Who is named instead. The competitor list tells us who to study.
- Which sources are cited. If a competitor wins through a directory or a local article, that is a clear target.
What we do about gaps
- Fix inconsistent name, address, phone and hours across site and listings.
- Add pages that answer local questions plainly: services, areas served, how booking works.
- Earn mentions on directories, review platforms and local press.
- Make sure AI crawlers can reach the site.
- Re-check after two weeks.
For multi-location clients, the Action Board gives a prioritized list, and we handle the items in order. We do not publish anything automatically without a human read.
What we tell business owners
We cannot make ChatGPT recommend a business, and no tool can. What we can do is show where the business is named, where it is not, who wins instead and why. We also tell owners not to judge from one query. Two weeks of daily data across locations tells you far more than any single chat.
If you do one thing today, write ten local prompts, run them in ChatGPT, and write down what you see. Then decide whether you need daily tracking.
