Which AI visibility tools can track prompts at the city or state level? What we use

What we use to track AI prompts at the city or state level for clients: Promptwatch plan gating, coordinate targeting, and where local SEO tools fit in.

Local clients ask for this more than any other feature. A dental group wants to know what ChatGPT says to someone in Leeds, not to a generic user in the UK. A home services company wants the answer for Tampa, not Florida as a whole. Most AI visibility tools track at country level. A few go further, and the difference is large enough to change how you scope a program.

Why location changes the answer

Engines respond to location, both when the prompt names a place ("best electrician in Austin") and when it does not ("best electrician near me"). Results for a prompt asked from one city can differ from another. If you only track the country, you may be reading an average that matches no real customer.

We handle it in two layers. First, prompts that name the place explicitly, which any tool can track. Second, prompts asked as if from a place, which needs location features in the tool.

What Promptwatch offers

We run client programs on Promptwatch, so this is the system we know best.

  • Country-level tracking on every paid plan.
  • State and city tracking on the Business plan ($579 a month), and on every agency plan (Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799).
  • Local GEO/SEO targeting, added in October 2026, pins a monitor to exact coordinates with a radius from 20 meters to 5 kilometers. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. Other models fall back to country, state or city. It is on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise.

What that means in practice: Essential and Professional customers are country-level. If a client genuinely needs city granularity, we do not squeeze it out of a cheaper plan. We scope Business, or if we are running several clients, the agency plans. The agency plans are self-serve and include unlimited projects, unlimited prompts and ten seats. They are not aimed at a single brand, so a one-site business should look at Business.

The advantage of doing this in Promptwatch rather than a separate local tool is that the location data sits beside citation analytics, crawler logs and visitor analytics. We see not just that a client lost the Tampa prompt but which pages were cited and whether the bots could reach the client's own city page.

Where local SEO tools fit

We do not pretend a full platform replaces every local tool.

Local Falcon sends one prompt from many points on a grid, from 9 to 441, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Grok. It maps neighborhood-level differences and starts at $24.99 a month on a credit system, where a 9x9 scan uses 81 credits. It is good for a single location with a map-pack mindset.

BrightLocal has per-location AI scoring on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, included on plans from $41 a month for one location, with a cap of 20 prompts per location.

Synup AEO writes 16 local prompts per location and refreshes monthly, from $49 a month for one location.

Yext Scout benchmarks per location against local competitors and does not publish pricing.

For clients already using one of these for listings and reviews, we often keep it for the local-SEO side and add Promptwatch for citations, crawlers and attribution.

A rollout we use for multi-location clients

  1. Pick the markets. Rank locations by revenue. Start with the top five.
  2. Write prompt templates. One set per service line, with a placeholder for the city. "Best [service] in [city]", "[service] near me", "top rated [service] [city] for [audience]".
  3. Clone by market. Create the prompts for each city and tag by market, so reports can slice by city or region.
  4. Pin the monitors where coordinates matter, such as a downtown location versus a suburb.
  5. Baseline for a month. Local answers move around, so a single day proves nothing.
  6. Read citations per market. The sources that win in Austin may be different from Dallas. Fix the profile and local page issues first.

What to expect

AI answers vary between runs and sessions, and no vendor controls how engines personalize. Treat city-level results as a sample and look at trends across weeks. And no tool can promise a recommendation in a given city. What it gives you is evidence about where you stand and why.

Starting small

Promptwatch has a free Explore tier with 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. You can test explicit-city prompts there before deciding whether location tracking justifies Business or an agency plan.
