Best AI search rank tracking tool: what we use and how we read it
What we use as an AI search rank tracking tool for client work, how we define rank in AI answers, and how we read position, share of voice and citations.
Our clients grew up on rank trackers. They know what a rank report looks like, and they expect the AI version to look the same. We have to be honest early: there is no ranking for an AI answer in the sense they mean. There is a set of measurements that does the same job, and a good tool reports them properly.
What we call a rank
We define three numbers and use them consistently.
Position in answer. When an engine lists several brands, the average place yours takes across runs.
Share of voice. Our mentions as a fraction of all brand mentions across the prompt set.
Citation position. Where our URL falls among cited sources, and how often it is cited.
None is a fixed number. They are averages over many runs, per engine and per country. Once clients see them that way, the weekly conversation gets calmer.
The tool behind it
Promptwatch is where we track these. It runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language, and reports Position in Answer, Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Sentiment. Citation analytics add URL positions and a citation rate per page.
The reading tools matter as much as the numbers. A/B period comparison puts this month next to last. The heatmap compares any two dimensions, which is how we spot that a client ranks well on ChatGPT and poorly on Google AI Overviews for the same topic. Custom dashboards with templates, including a competitor comparison and an AI model breakdown, give each client a view that matches their questions.
Coverage is real-interface monitoring for ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok come through APIs, and we label them in reports.
Choosing prompts like keywords
Rank tracking needs a target list. Prompt Volumes give search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing, so we prioritize prompts the way we prioritize keywords. Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. That is how an existing keyword list becomes a prompt list.
When the number is bad
A rank report is only useful if it points to a fix. When a client is not named, we work through the same checks in order.
- Crawler access. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified logs for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others. A blocked or erroring page cannot be cited. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan.
- Citations. Who is cited instead, and what format do they use?
- Content gaps. Is there a page for the prompt at all? Content gap analysis gives coverage scores.
- Actions. The Action Board holds a prioritized list, and a weekly Discovery agent suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run.
Search Console in the same view
Clients who care about classic rank want one place. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. For a page that ranks in classic search but is not cited by AI, that view shows it right away.
What we tell clients
We cannot guarantee a position. Engines vary answers between runs, countries and wording, and a single day tells you nothing. We report over four to eight weeks, and we flag that volumes and difficulty scores are estimates.
Plan choices
Explore is free, with 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. Essential is $95 a month for 50 prompts and no crawler logs. Professional is $245 and adds crawler logs and custom reports, and it is where most brand programs begin. Business is $579, with state and city tracking and local targeting for clients who sell locally. Agency plans start at $199 with unlimited projects and prompts.
Alternatives
Suite add-ons from Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking keep AI numbers beside classic ranks, which some teams prefer for simplicity. AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI offer credit-based or technically focused alternatives. If a client only wants a light mention count, a lower-cost tracker can do it. For programs where the rank report has to lead to action, the platform we run is the one that connects position, citations, crawler logs and visits.
