Looking for something to monitor if AI assistants are mentioning my brand
Looking for something to monitor if AI assistants mention your brand? How we set up brand monitoring for clients and what to require from any tool.
When a client says they want to know whether AI assistants are mentioning their brand, they usually picture an alert, like a Google Alert for ChatGPT. It does not work that way. Assistants generate answers on demand, so you monitor by asking: run the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and record who gets named.
What a useful monitor does
- Runs a fixed prompt set daily, across the engines your buyers use.
- Records whether the brand appears, where in the answer, and with what sentiment.
- Tracks competitors in the same prompts.
- Shows which sources the assistants cite.
- Tells you whether the bots can read your site.
- Connects visibility to visits.
Items 4 to 6 are where basic monitors stop. They are also the items that tell you what to do next.
How we build the prompt set
We write 20 to 40 prompts in three groups. Brand prompts ("is [brand] good for...", "[brand] pricing"). Category prompts ("best [category] for [persona]"). Comparison prompts ("[brand] vs [competitor]"). We take phrasing from sales and support, and we split by country when the client sells in several markets.
The platform we use is Promptwatch. Its Brand Book lets us define what counts as a mention, and brand aliases catch spelling variants and product names. That sounds minor until a client has three names for the same product.
How we read the output
Promptwatch reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment (a per-response score from 1 to 100, with a weekly AI summary) and Position in Answer, from daily prompt panels per model, country and language. We watch share of voice against two or three named competitors, because an absolute score without context tells the client little.
We also pay attention to sentiment. Being mentioned negatively, or with outdated claims, is a different problem from not being mentioned, and the fix is usually updating the sources the assistants cite.
What to do when the answer is "not mentioned"
Citation analytics shows which pages and domains the assistants pull from, and offsite mention reports find third-party pages naming the brand without a link. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports cover the places assistants lean on heavily. If the brand's own pages never get cited, we check access. Promptwatch's IP-verified crawler logs show whether OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others reach the site. Logs start on the Professional plan, and Essential does not include them.
Alerts and reporting
Promptwatch sends usage alerts at 85 percent of quota, a weekly digest email for the Action Board, and scheduled PDF reports, which suit clients who want a monthly document. Agent Chat can answer questions over the live data when someone asks "what changed this week?".
Limits we explain to clients
Assistants vary between runs, countries and accounts. Monitoring is a sample, not a census. It cannot make an assistant mention a brand, and a single bad run is not a trend. We look at weeks of data, and we are careful not to overreact to one day.
The short version
Build a prompt set, define what counts as a mention, track competitors, read citations, check crawler access, and report visits. Start with a free Explore account if you only want to see the idea working, then move to a paid plan once the prompt set and reporting needs are clear. For clients who want the monitoring and the fixes in one system, Promptwatch is what we recommend.
We also keep a simple log of brand name variants and product renames, because those silently break mention counts.
