Tools for AI search visibility: what an agency actually uses on client work
The tools for AI search visibility an agency really uses: measurement, crawl access, content and reporting, and why we run client programs on Promptwatch.
When a client asks which tools we use for AI search visibility, the honest answer is a short list organized by job, not a long list of logos. Most of the work comes down to four jobs: measuring where the client appears, finding out why, fixing it and reporting the result. Here is how we split them, and where Promptwatch sits.
Job 1: measure where the client appears
You need a prompt panel and a tracker. The panel matters more than the tool. We build 30 to 50 buyer prompts from sales calls, support questions and Search Console queries, and label each as organic, brand or competitor comparison. Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page, and personas can be stacked so the same question is run as different buyers would ask it.
The tracker then runs the panel daily per model, country and language and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Lighter trackers do this too, and some do it for less money. What we want from a tracker is the ability to freeze the panel, define competitors and see results per engine.
Job 2: find out why
This is where tool choice matters most, and where we outgrew monitoring-only products.
- Citation analytics show which pages and domains engines cite. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports show the community sources, and offsite mentions show where a brand is named without a link.
- AI crawler logs show whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others can fetch the client's pages. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics verifies by IP, so spoofed user agents are filtered out, and it reports errors with failure explanations. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan.
- Visitor analytics show AI-referred traffic and conversions by engine.
- Site audit. A weekly audit with 21 checks and a health score catches basics like blocked paths and broken pages.
A good share of "we are invisible in AI" cases turn out to be crawler access, a thin page or missing third-party sources. A tracker that only counts mentions cannot tell which.
Job 3: fix it
Fixes fall into content, technical and off-site work.
Content. Content gap analysis scores coverage against the prompts. Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates for existing pages. The Content Agent (Business and Enterprise plans) plans, writes and publishes against gaps on a schedule, with a review inbox, to WordPress, Webflow or Framer. We use the review inbox on every client account, because a person who knows the client should read what goes live.
Technical. Crawl access, structured data, clean markup. The audit and crawler logs tell us where to start.
Off-site. Sources the engines already trust in the category. The citation reports give us a target list.
We also sometimes use dedicated agentic content or SEO tools for volume, such as article autopilots or tools that open pull requests for technical fixes. They can be useful, but they publish without telling us whether any engine cites the output, so we pair them with measurement.
Job 4: report
Clients want a report they can read in five minutes. Promptwatch gives us custom reports, scheduled PDFs and a Looker Studio connector, plus Agent Chat, which answers questions over the live data and can build dashboards or reports. The Action Board gives each client a prioritized list with assignees.
The free tools we use before a pitch
Before any engagement, we run the free AI Visibility Report, which scans a brand without a login, and the Agentic Readiness Check. The GEO Inspector Chrome extension shows ChatGPT fan-outs and the difference between fetched and cited sources, and runs locally. The AI Bots directory and the llms.txt and robots.txt generators help in technical conversations. None of this replaces a proper panel, but it gives a prospect something concrete on the first call.
How alternatives fit
We trial others. Mentionable and Ceyo are solid trackers at lower prices, and Ceyo has an agency project ladder. Allmond is useful for broad weekly surveys. AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are platform-style products at higher entry prices. Semrush and Ahrefs have add-ons for teams who already live in them. For monitoring alone, any of them could be right for a given client. We stay on Promptwatch for programs because it covers all four jobs, so we are not stitching exports together.
What we tell clients
No tool controls what an AI engine says. Our promise is a stable method: a frozen panel, a monthly report with causes and a prioritized list of actions, measured again the next month. If you are choosing tools yourself, start with a free scan, build the panel, and add paid tools only when you hit a question the free ones cannot answer.
