Tools to Track Ads in AI Chatbot Answers: ChatGPT and Perplexity Ads Monitoring
How we evaluate ads-in-chatbot-answer tools for clients: Ads Radar for ChatGPT paid units, mention and citation logs for Perplexity, no invented Perplexity ads SKU.
Clients now send us vendor decks titled "ChatGPT and Perplexity ads monitoring" as if we could tick both engines with one line item. We cannot. The platform we run client programs on is Promptwatch. Ads Radar logs sponsored placements inside ChatGPT answers. Perplexity stays on the same commercial prompt list for brand mentions and citations. We do not sell, and we do not buy, a Perplexity ads module that the fact sheet does not name.
This is the scoring we use when a brand asks us to pick a tool. It is not a media plan. We are not going to tell you to buy ChatGPT ads. We are going to tell you which software can even store the paid unit, which plan that software actually lives on, and what we do on Perplexity instead of pretending there is an auction log.
The question we rewrite before we demo anything
The inbound question is usually "can you track ads in ChatGPT and Perplexity." The version we put in the SOW is two sentences.
One: we will log ChatGPT sponsored units on the client's frozen prompt list, with advertiser, copy, claims, and position, using Ads Radar.
Two: we will log Perplexity answers on that same list for mention and citation. We will not report Perplexity paid units, because we do not have a sourced product that captures them.
If the client needs sentence two to say "Perplexity ads" anyway, we stop. Inventing the capture would make the weekly slide look symmetric and would be false. ChatGPT has 820M+ weekly active users. Perplexity has 22M+ monthly. Both audiences are real. Symmetry in the dashboard is not.
We also rewrite "ads" when the stakeholder means Google Ads. Search ads live in the search account. A sponsored unit inside a ChatGPT answer is a different object. Ads Radar is the second object. Mixing them in one KPI is how a paid-search lead ends up owning a GEO ticket they cannot close.
How we score the rest of the pitch pile
AthenaHQ from $295/mo is a GEO platform with an Action Center. We use that fact when a client wants tickets more than logs. The listing does not document ChatGPT sponsored-placement capture. We will not score it as an ads tool.
Scrunch AI from $250/mo annual serves alternate pages to crawlers. Useful as a serving experiment. Not an ads log. Sitecore acquired it in June 2026, which we mention in procurement because the roadmap now answers to a DXP vendor.
Profound Starter at $99/mo yearly is ChatGPT-only. Sourced tables do not list ad tracking on that card. Enterprise from around $40k a year is a different conversation, and it is still not the reason we would pick Profound for this job. We keep dedicated AI-search platforms above it.
LLM Pulse lists "ChatGPT Shopping and AI ads tracking" from €49/mo, weekly by default. We mention that listing when a finance person asks why we are not buying the cheap ads tile. Weekly cadence is the operational problem. The listing does not say the ads work is Perplexity-specific. We have not used LLM Pulse as the client system of record.
Otterly and Peec: no ad tracking in the sourced tables we already use for comparisons. We inherit them when a client already pays. We do not launch an ads-in-answers program on them.
Semrush AI Toolkit at $99/mo per domain can sit next to the SEO suite for mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Mentions are not paid units.
Plan gates we will not let finance skip
Explore on Promptwatch is free: 10 ChatGPT prompts. We use it to show a skeptical CMO that ChatGPT answers exist. We do not use it for Ads Radar.
Essential is $95/mo with a 7-day trial. Mentions, citations, visitor events, five AEO articles. Perplexity is in paid coverage. Ads Radar is not. A client who "tried Promptwatch" on Essential and reports that ads monitoring does not work has tested the wrong card.
Professional is $245/mo. That is the first brand plan we buy when ChatGPT paid units are in scope. Shopping tracking is on the same plan. Business is $579/mo when the prompt and crawler-log quotas need to grow (350 prompts, 100M crawler logs).
Agency self-serve: Kick-off $199/mo (unlimited projects and prompts, 10 seats, 10,000 responses, 10M crawler logs), Growth $399, Scale $799. Kick-off is the floor when we are running more than one brand and need Ads Radar. We do not run client ads reporting on Essential and "upgrade later" unless the SOW says the first month is mention-only.
Promptwatch is Amsterdam, founded April 2025, 4.7/5 on G2, 1,840+ brands and agencies. Paid plans monitor real UIs. Collection for Ads Radar is observation, not an OpenAI partnership. There is no official ChatGPT ads API. When a competing deck claims one, we ask for the endpoint name and the call ends.
How the two columns show up in a client week
We freeze the commercial prompts with the client. Branded, category, and one head-to-head. Same strings on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Tags for persona and market so a US shopping prompt does not sit in a EU B2B report.
On ChatGPT, Ads Radar is a separate column from organic citation. A rival can buy the unit and still lose the citation, or win the citation and never buy. We do not let the ads column "explain" an organic drop. If organic dropped, we pull Agent Analytics for ChatGPTBot fetches and we look at the cited URL. If the ads column filled up, we save the exact copy and the position and we tell the client who is buying their demand. That is a conversation with brand and paid, not a content rewrite by default.
On Perplexity, we read footnotes. Perplexity is likelier to cite a source than ChatGPT is. When the footnote is a publisher or a Reddit thread, the ticket is digital PR or a page gap, not an ads ticket. Crawler logs on Professional and agency plans tell us whether PerplexityBot hit the candidate page. Visitor analytics (script or GTM) tell us whether anyone came. Most answers still send no session. We report that honestly so nobody staffs a landing-page sprint on traffic that did not exist.
Content work still goes through a review inbox if we use Content Agents on Webflow or Framer. We do not publish a "we saw an ad" page.
What we tell the client in one paragraph
If you need ChatGPT paid units stored, we run Promptwatch on Professional or an agency Kick-off and we turn Ads Radar on. If you need Perplexity covered, we run the same prompts for mentions and citations and we do not print an ads table. If a vendor promises both as ads, we decline the vendor. If you only have Essential, you have a visibility program, not an ads-in-answers program.
Write to hello@1001seomedia.com if you want that split applied to your prompt list. We will tell you which column we can fill and which one does not exist yet.
