Top tools to track Reddit threads that influence AI recommendations: our agency workflow
How our agency tracks Reddit threads that influence AI recommendations: separating listening from citation tracking, what to do with the threads, and the tool we use.
Clients have noticed that Reddit threads appear in AI answers about their category, and most of them ask the same thing: "can we track those?" The answer is yes, but the first step is separating two jobs that tools tend to blur. Here is how we handle it, and why the platform we run it on is Promptwatch.
Listening is not the same as citation tracking
Reddit listening alerts you when a keyword appears. It is useful for community and support, and dedicated Reddit monitoring tools exist for it. We do not rate them here.
Reddit citation tracking records which threads AI engines actually cite when answering your tracked prompts. That is the job that matters for AI recommendations. A thread nobody cites does not influence anything, however popular it is on Reddit.
The practical consequence: do not start by monitoring every mention of the client. Start from the prompts that matter for their revenue, find which Reddit threads engines cite for them, and work from that list.
Our workflow
1. Build the prompt panel. Buyer questions, comparison questions and "best X for Y" questions. Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords or People Also Ask.
2. Pull the Reddit citation report. Promptwatch has a Reddit citation report next to YouTube and LinkedIn. It lists the threads cited for the panel. We sort by how many prompts each thread appears for, not by how many comments it has.
3. Read the threads. This step is manual. For each high-impact thread we look at what is being recommended, whether the client is named, whether the information is out of date and what language people use. That language often shows up in our content later.
4. Classify. Each thread goes into one of four buckets:
- the client is named positively, so we leave it alone and watch it;
- the client is named with wrong or old information, so a correction is warranted;
- a competitor is recommended and the client is absent, so we look at what the thread is missing;
- the thread is a general discussion that engines cite for context, so the job is to be a better source elsewhere.
5. Track the threads over time. Page Tracker follows specific URLs, including Reddit threads and competitor pages. Citation Trends shows when a page was first cited, how fast it ramped up, its peak and how fast it decays. A thread that decays fast is not worth heavy investment.
6. Check offsite mentions. Offsite mentions find where the brand is named on third-party pages without a link. Those are often outreach targets.
What we do, and do not do, in threads
We advise clients to participate openly. That means a brand or employee account that says who it is, answers the question asked and links only when relevant. We do not recommend persona accounts or undisclosed promotion. Some tools in this market sell exactly that, and Reddit communities are quick to notice. It is a brand risk, and a reputational hit on Reddit can itself end up in AI answers.
Often the better move is not to post at all. If engines cite a thread because the client's own page does not answer the question, we write the page. Promptwatch's content gap analysis scores coverage against the prompts, Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates for an existing page, and the Content Agent (Business and Enterprise) can plan and draft content with a review inbox. Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow or Framer.
We also check the basics. Agent Analytics shows whether AI crawlers can fetch the pages we want engines to prefer over a thread. If the client's page cannot be read by OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, it will lose to Reddit every time.
Where other tools fit
Several tools touch Reddit. Orchly watches Reddit threads as part of an agent workflow at a low price, though with a small prompt allowance. AEO Vision lists Reddit Insights on higher tiers. Brand24 pairs social listening with an AI add-on. Ahrefs Brand Radar reports Reddit and YouTube sources from an index of modeled prompts. CrowdReply places comments through community profiles. For listening or low-cost experiments these can fit. We stay on Promptwatch for client programs because the Reddit report sits next to crawler logs, visitor analytics and content tools, so we can go from "this thread is cited" to "this page now replaces it" in one place.
Caveats we give
A Reddit thread cited this month may disappear from answers next month. Engines vary between runs and countries, so we report trends over a fixed panel. We cannot guarantee that a correction in a thread, or a new page, changes an AI recommendation. We can show whether citations moved after we made a change.
If you are choosing a tool, trial it with ten prompts from your category and see whether it can tell you which Reddit threads are cited, how often and whether your brand appears in them.
